What's in a Name? The Story of Seabrook
Seabrook got its name from a man named Thomas Seabrook. He was an engineer who helped map out land for the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the early 1870s, he built three small houses and a park with deer near the train station.
A Look Back: Seabrook's History
A school was built in Seabrook in 1895. The community grew because of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. A train line to Washington opened in 1872. It had stations in places like Glenn Dale, Seabrook, and Lanham.
Thomas Seabrook bought a large piece of land in 1871. He wanted to create a peaceful community near the planned train station. By 1880, a station building and three special houses were built. Later, shops and a schoolhouse were added.
By 1914, Seabrook was still small. It had only a few buildings near the railroad. By 1957, it had grown to about 185 houses. These houses were on 10 streets arranged like a grid. The community stretched from Good Luck Road to Annapolis Road.
More houses were built in Seabrook throughout the 1900s. Shops and businesses grew along the main roads. Today, you can find many businesses along Annapolis Road and Lanham-Severn Road. The old train station and early shops are gone. However, the old schoolhouse and some early homes still stand.
Many red brick homes in Seabrook were built in the 1950s. These homes were for new workers at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA. This space center is just north of Seabrook. In recent years, more apartment buildings have been built. But Seabrook is still mostly a residential area. It has many single homes with green lawns and old oak trees.
