Sean Patrick Hayes (born June 26, 1970) is an American actor, comedian, and producer. He is well-known for playing Jack McFarland in the TV show Will & Grace. For this role, he won an Primetime Emmy Award and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has also been nominated for many other awards, including Golden Globe Awards and Tony Awards. He won a Tony Award for his work on stage.
Sean Hayes also runs a TV production company called Hazy Mills Productions. This company has made popular shows like Grimm and Hot in Cleveland. He has acted in many movies too, such as The Cat in the Hat (2003) and The Bucket List (2007). Since 2020, he has co-hosted a funny podcast called SmartLess with Jason Bateman and Will Arnett.

Early Life and Beginnings
Sean Hayes was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois. He was the youngest of five children. His mother, Mary Hayes, worked as a director for a food bank. He grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, near Chicago.
After finishing Glenbard West High School, Sean went to Illinois State University. He studied how to play the piano. He left college early to become a music director at a theater. Sean also worked as a classical pianist. He learned improv comedy at The Second City in Chicago. He even wrote music for a play called Antigone. In 1995, he moved to Los Angeles. There, he started working as a stand-up comedian and an actor. He even appeared in a commercial for Doritos during the Super Bowl XXXII in 1998.
Becoming a Star
When he was a teenager, Sean Hayes was an extra in the movie Lucas (1986). His first professional acting job was in the movie Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss (1998). This movie helped him get noticed by many people.
Will & Grace Success
In the same year, Sean Hayes got the role of Jack McFarland in the NBC comedy show Will & Grace. Jack was a very lively and often unemployed actor. The show became a huge hit and lasted for many years. Sean's acting as Jack earned him seven Emmy Award nominations. He won the award for his very first nomination! He was also nominated for six Golden Globe Awards for his performance.
Movies and Voice Acting
Sean Hayes has been in many films. He was in Cats & Dogs (2001) and played Jerry Lewis in Martin and Lewis (2002). He also appeared in Pieces of April (2003) and The Cat in the Hat (2003). He was the voice of Brain in the 2008 movie Igor. In 2010, he voiced Mr. Tinkles again in Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.
He played Larry Fine in The Three Stooges (2012). In 2017, he voiced Steven, the devil emoji, in The Emoji Movie.
Broadway Stage Work
Sean Hayes made his first appearance on Broadway in April 2010. He starred as Chuck Baxter in the musical Promises, Promises. For this role, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
He also hosted the 64th Tony Awards in 2010. He played God in the comedy play An Act of God from 2015 to 2016. In 2022, he played Oscar Levant in the play Good Night, Oscar. This role earned him a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.
Beyond Acting
Sean Hayes and his friend Todd Milliner started a TV production company called Hazy Mills Productions in 2004. Sean knew that his role in Will & Grace would not last forever. This company has produced many TV shows. These include Hot in Cleveland, Grimm, and Hollywood Game Night.
Fun with His Husband
Sean Hayes and his husband, Scott Icenogle, create fun lip-sync videos. They share these videos on their YouTube channel called The Kitchen Sync. They have lip-synced to songs like Trouble. Sean and Scott also wrote a book together called Plum. The book is about how the sugar plum fairy got her wings. Sean has always loved the Nutcracker musical.
Podcasts and More
In July 2020, Sean Hayes, along with Will Arnett and Jason Bateman, started a comedy podcast called SmartLess. He also hosts another podcast called HypochondriActor with Dr. Priyanka Wali. In 2021, Sean starred in and helped produce the Netflix show Q-Force.
Personal Life
Sean Hayes received an honorary PhD from Illinois State University in 2013. In November 2014, he announced that he had married his partner of eight years, Scott Icenogle.
