Seat is a smaller mountain, also known as a fell, located in the beautiful Lake District in England. It stands 561 meters (about 1,840 feet) tall. Seat is often seen next to its bigger neighbors, Haystacks and High Crag. You can find it in the southwestern part of Buttermere, which is a lovely lake in the North Western Fells area.
What is Seat Like?
Seat is nestled between two other fells, Haystacks and High Crag. It has many small rocky cliffs, called crags, and its top is fairly flat. At the bottom of Seat, you'll find Buttermere lake. This lake used to be connected to Crummock Water further north. On the western side of Seat is Ennerdale Forest, located in the Ennerdale Valley.
Seat is surrounded by other interesting mountains. These include Fleetwith Pike, Haystacks, High Crag, High Stile, Red Pike, and Dodd. As you look northwest from Seat, the land gradually gets lower towards the coast of Cumberland.
How Can You Climb Seat?
Many people enjoy climbing Seat from the southeastern side of Buttermere. A popular starting point is Gatesgarth Farm. From there, you can cross the road and begin your climb near the bottom of Haystacks. Often, climbers will visit Haystacks first. After that, they might head north towards Seat and High Crag, then continue to High Stile, Red Pike, and Dodd. Finally, they walk back along the lake to the farm.
Another main way to climb Seat is to start from the north end of the lake, near the village of Buttermere. From there, you can go up to Red Pike, then to High Stile, High Crag, and finally reach Seat and Haystacks. Less common ways to climb include using the Scarth Gap path, which comes from Ennerdale Forest.
What Can You See From the Top?
Seat actually has two high points: a southern one and a northern one. The northern summit is the true highest point. At the very top, you'll find a pile of rocks called a cairn. It even has a bit of old, rusted metal on it!
From the summit of Seat, you can clearly see High Crag right to the north. To the south, you'll spot Haystacks. If you look east, you'll enjoy views of the beautiful Buttermere valley. Looking west, you'll see Ennerdale Forest and its valley.
