Sebastián Pozas Perea was a Spanish military officer and a government worker. He was born in Zaragoza in 1876 and passed away in 1946.
Early Military Career
Sebastián Pozas Perea trained to be a soldier in the cavalry, which is a part of the army that historically fought on horseback. He spent a long time serving in Spanish Morocco. There, he fought in the Rif Wars, which were conflicts between Spain and local tribes.
By 1926, he became a general, a very high rank in the army. This promotion was ordered by the government of Miguel Primo de Rivera. In the 1930s, Pozas worked for the Spanish Republic. He was the Director General of the Guardia Civil, which is a national police force in Spain.
Role in the Spanish Civil War
On June 18, 1936, a group called the Nationalists started a rebellion against the government. This led to the Spanish Civil War. Sebastián Pozas Perea stayed loyal to the government. He gathered many police officers and other armed units to support the Republic.
In the first days of the war, he helped to reorganize the loyal parts of the Guardia Civil. They became known as the Guardia Nacional Republicana.
Pozas briefly served as the Minister of the Interior, a government official in charge of internal affairs. In October 1936, he was given command of the Army of the Center. This army faced tough battles, like the Battle of Jarama in February 1937. His army managed to push back the Nationalist forces that were trying to surround Madrid. This was after a very bloody fight that ended with the Battle of Guadalajara.
In May, Pozas became the commander of the Army of the East. He led an attack towards Huesca. This attack was very costly for the Republic, resulting in 10,000 soldiers being injured or killed. Pozas also led the Republican Army of the East in the Battle of Belchite and the Battle of Teruel.
Life in Exile
In 1939, the Republic lost the Spanish Civil War. Sebastián Pozas Perea then went to live in Mexico. He lived there in exile, meaning he could not return to his home country. He passed away in Mexico in 1946.
