Secret (chocolate bar) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Secret was a super yummy chocolate bar that was popular in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s. It was made by a company called Rowntree Mackintosh. Imagine a chocolate bar that looked like a bird's nest on the outside! Inside, it had a smooth, creamy filling, a bit like a light chocolate mousse. It came in a shiny gold wrapper with the word "Secret" written in purple and white.

What Was the Secret Bar?

The Secret chocolate bar was known for its unique look and taste. Its outer shell was made of chocolate, shaped to look like a delicate bird's nest. This crunchy shell held a soft, creamy centre. This creamy part was a light chocolate mousse, similar to the filling you might find in a Walnut Whip. Each bar was wrapped in a bright gold package, making it stand out on the shop shelves.

The Famous Advert

In 1990, a very memorable advert for the Secret bar was shown on TV. It was like a mini mystery film from the 1940s! In the advert, an elegant lady was riding a train. Suddenly, a man rushed into her cabin. He quickly handed her a Secret bar and told her, "guard this with your life."

The man then ran off to distract two mysterious people who were following him. While he was gone, the lady couldn't resist the delicious chocolate bar. She ate the whole Secret bar because it was just too tempting! When the man returned to get it back, it was gone. At the end of the advert, a voice-over said, "You can't trust anyone to keep a Secret."

Why Did It Disappear?

Sadly, the Secret chocolate bar was stopped being made a few years after its popular advert. This happened because it was quite expensive to make each bar. Also, not enough people were buying them, so the company decided to stop production.

Could It Come Back?

Even though it's been many years, some people really miss the Secret bar! They have started online petitions, especially on websites like Facebook, asking Nestlé (the company that now owns Rowntree Mackintosh) to bring it back. So far, the Secret bar hasn't returned.

However, there's hope! A similar thing happened with the Cadbury's Wispa chocolate bar. It was stopped in 2003, but after many people signed petitions, it was brought back on October 8, 2007. This shows that sometimes, if enough fans ask, a favorite treat can make a comeback!
