Segundo Alejandro Castillo Nazareno, born on May 15, 1982, is a retired professional footballer from Ecuador. He mostly played as a defensive midfielder, a position that helps protect the team's defense. He could also play as a central midfielder. Castillo was a key player for the Ecuador national team from 2003 to 2016. He played 87 games and scored 9 goals for his country. He finished his playing career with Guayaquil City in Ecuador's top league.

Segundo Castillo: A Football Journey
Starting His Club Career
Segundo Castillo began his football journey in Quito, Ecuador. He started with Club Deportivo Espoli in 2000. He played for three years, scoring 11 goals in 66 games. After that, he moved to Club Deportivo El Nacional, another successful team in Ecuador. There, he helped his team win two league titles in a row, in 2005 and 2006. He scored 11 goals in 112 matches for El Nacional.
Playing in Europe
In August 2006, Castillo moved to Europe. He signed a two-year deal with Serbian club Red Star Belgrade. He quickly became an important player. In his first season, he scored 8 goals and helped the team win both the league and the cup in 2007. Overall, he scored 18 goals in 72 games for Red Star Belgrade.
In August 2008, Castillo joined the English Premier League club Everton on a one-year loan. He made his first league appearance on September 14, 2008. This was against Stoke City. He scored his only goal for Everton in a UEFA Cup match against Standard Liège. He hit a powerful shot from 25 yards out. Everton did not offer him a permanent contract after his loan ended.
Castillo returned to the Premier League in August 2009. He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan. He played eight games for Wolves before his time there ended. He then received offers from other clubs, including LDU Quito and Barcelona.
Returning to South America
On July 29, 2010, Segundo Castillo returned to Ecuador. He signed with Deportivo Quito. Later, in June 2013, he signed a two-year contract with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. However, in September 2014, Al-Hilal decided he no longer fit into their plans.
In December 2014, Castillo joined Dorados de Sinaloa for the next season in Mexico. Then, in December 2015, he returned to Ecuador again. He signed with Barcelona Sporting Club.
Representing Ecuador
Castillo became a part of the Ecuadorian national team in 2005. His first international game was on August 17, 2005, against Venezuela. He quickly became a regular player. He was chosen for the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad. He played every minute of Ecuador's World Cup games. This was a special moment, as Ecuador reached the second round for the first time ever. Since 2006, he often played as a defensive midfielder and sometimes captained the team.
He scored his first goal in a World Cup qualifying match on October 12, 2012. It was a header in stoppage time, helping Ecuador win 3–1 against Chile. Castillo was very important for Ecuador's qualification to the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He scored important goals that helped his team earn crucial points. These goals came against Venezuela and Argentina.
Unfortunately, Castillo missed the 2014 World Cup. He suffered an injury during a friendly match against Mexico.
