When Was Sembawang Station Built?

When the North South Line was first planned, a station for the Sembawang area was not included. However, the Singapore government later decided to add this important station. Sembawang MRT station officially opened on 10 February 1996.

At that time, the area around the station was not as developed as it is today. There were only a few buildings and roads, like Canberra Road and a small part of Sembawang New Town. Over the years, the area has grown a lot, and the station has become very busy.

Making the Station Safer

To keep everyone safe, new features were added to the station. In 2011, the Land Transport Authority started building special low doors and barriers along the tracks. These were finished in 2012. These doors help prevent people from accidentally falling onto the tracks.

Also in 2012, large fans were installed at the station. These "high-volume low-speed" fans help to keep the air moving and make the station more comfortable for passengers, especially on hot days.
