Geography of Seneca
The Town of Seneca covers an area of about 32.4 square miles (84.0 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 32.2 square miles (83.5 square kilometers). A small part, about 0.2 square miles (0.5 square kilometers), is water. This means there are some lakes, rivers, or streams within the town's borders.
History of Seneca
The eastern part of the Town of Seneca has a long history. It's close to the Wisconsin River. This area was once part of the "Indian strip." This land was sold by the Menominee people to the U.S. government in 1836. This happened through a special agreement called the Treaty of the Cedars.
Because of this, the land was explored and mapped very early on. In 1839, a team from the U.S. government surveyed the eastern and southern edges of the town. They walked through the forests and crossed rivers. They used tools like a Gunter's chain (a long measuring chain) and a Solar compass to map the land.
In 1851, another group surveyed the town's different sections. They wrote down what they saw:
The eastern and southeastern parts of this Town have alternating ridges of pine barrens and Tamarack swamps. There's a small area near the river that seems pretty good. However, the lowlands by the river are often flooded, making them less useful.
They also described the western and northern parts:
The western and northern parts of the Town are mostly a large Cranberry Marsh. This marsh is wet and not good for farming. It has small "islands" of dry land with a few trees. You can find scattered Pines, Tamarack, and Black Oak trees almost everywhere. This marsh might be valuable for the cranberries it grows in large amounts. Otherwise, it was thought to be not very useful.
The Town of Seneca got its name from a small village that used to exist within its boundaries. That village was also called Seneca, but it no longer exists today.
