Car Manufacturing in Seneffe
Between 1965 and 1982, Seneffe was home to a large car factory. This factory belonged to a company called British Leyland.
Assembling Popular Car Models
The factory assembled popular car models like the Mini and the Austin Allegro. These cars were shipped to Seneffe in parts from a factory in England. Workers then put them together. In June 1977, the Seneffe plant built its 500,000th car. This was a special Austin Allegro 1300 Special.
Why the Factory Closed
The Seneffe car plant closed down in 1982. At that time, British Leyland's car designs were getting old. They were not selling as well across Europe. The economy in the UK was also struggling. This meant fewer people were buying cars. The closure of the factory caused sadness in the local area. Many people lost their jobs, and it was hard to find new work.
