Sentinel Butte is a small city in Golden Valley County, North Dakota, United States. In 2020, only 61 people lived there.
The city of Sentinel Butte was started in 1902. It was built along the transcontinental railway line of the Northern Pacific Railway. The city gets its name from a large, tall hill called a butte. This butte is about three miles (5 km) south of the city and stands 3,428 feet (1,045 meters) high.
The butte was named to honor two Arikara sentinels. These sentinels were killed near the butte in 1864 by the Sioux people.
