Early Life and Career
Sergey Aksyonov was born in Bălți, which was then part of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, on November 26, 1972. His father, Valery Aksyonov, was an officer in the Red Army. He also started a group called the Russian Community of Northern Moldova. This group was formed in Bălți in the late 1980s.
In 1989, Sergey Aksyonov moved to Crimea. He began studying at a college for military engineers in Simferopol. However, the fall of the Soviet Union happened before he could finish his studies. He decided not to take an oath of loyalty to Ukraine. He felt that Ukraine was "an unjustly severed appendage of Russia."
From 1993 to 1998, he worked as a deputy director for a food products company called Ellada. Later, he was a deputy director for Asteriks from 1998 to 2001. Since April 2001, he has been a deputy director at Eskada. Aksyonov also leads Crimea's Greco-Roman wrestling organization, Sports club Hwarang-do. He received his Ukrainian passport on August 12, 1997.
Political Journey
Aksyonov became a Russian citizen on January 10, 2003. In 2008, he joined the "Russian Community of Crimea." He also became a member of a public group called "Civic Asset of Crimea."
Since 2009, he has been a leader in the "Civic Asset of Crimea." He also co-chaired the "For Russian Unity in Crimea!" group. He became the leader of the political movement called Russian Unity.
Since 2010, Aksyonov served as a deputy in the Supreme Council of Crimea. He was elected as a member of the Russian Unity party. This party won three out of 100 seats in the Crimean parliament.
In March 2012, Aksyonov spoke on a TV show. He said that the time for Crimea to join Russia had passed. He stated, "Today we live in Ukraine. I have a Ukrainian passport, Ukrainian citizenship, so all problems should be discussed only in friendly relations between our countries."
Becoming Head of Crimea

After a period of political change in Ukraine, an important meeting took place in the Crimean parliament on February 27, 2014. This meeting happened while the building was occupied by Russian forces. During this session, Aksyonov was elected as the Prime Minister of Crimea. He received 55 out of 64 votes.
Under Ukraine's constitution, the Prime Minister of Crimea is usually chosen by the local parliament after talking with the President of Ukraine. However, the interim President of Ukraine at the time, Oleksandr Turchynov, said that Aksyonov's appointment was against the constitution.
Because of the events that led to Crimea joining Russia, Sergey Aksyonov was placed on sanction lists by Canada, the European Union, and the United States on March 17, 2014. This meant his money in these countries was frozen, and he was not allowed to visit them.
In the 2014 Crimean parliamentary election, Aksyonov ran as a candidate for the United Russia party. He was re-elected after the 2019 Crimean parliamentary election. For his second term, he decided not to hold both the Head of the Republic and Prime Minister positions. Yury Gotsanyuk was then appointed as the new Prime Minister.
Policies and Views
Aksyonov has stated that Ukrainian would no longer be an official language if Crimea joined Russia. He said that Russian and Crimean Tatar would be the two main languages. His main goals for Crimea included using money for building new things, healthcare, and energy. He also supported the completion of the Crimean Bridge.
Crimean Tatar Community
Sergey Aksyonov has worked to address disagreements among the ethnic Crimean Tatars regarding Crimea's joining Russia. He stated that actions against Crimea's joining Russia would be handled according to the law.
Views on Social Issues
Aksyonov has expressed his views on certain social topics. He stated that "we in Crimea do not need such people" regarding homosexuals. He also said that if public gatherings were attempted, police and self-defense forces would "react immediately."
Private Military Company
After the start of the 2022 conflict in Ukraine, Aksyonov helped create a private military company called Convoy. As of 2023, this company was operating in the Kherson Oblast region.
