Playing for Clubs
Sergio Gori was born in Milan, Italy. He started his football career very young with Inter Milan. He played 10 games for them between 1964 and 1966. This was during the time of the famous "Grande Inter" team of the 1960s. This team was one of the best in Europe.
To get more experience, Gori moved to Lanerossi Vicenza for two seasons. He returned to Inter Milan in 1968. After playing well for a season, he was sold to Cagliari Calcio. Another player, Angelo Domenghini, also moved to Cagliari with him.
Winning Titles with Inter Milan
While at Inter Milan, Gori helped the team win several important titles:
- The Italian league title (Serie A) in the 1964–65 and 1965–66 seasons.
- The 1964–65 European Cup, which is now called the UEFA Champions League. This is Europe's biggest club competition.
- The 1965 Intercontinental Cup, a match between the best teams from Europe and South America.
Success with Cagliari
In the 1969–70 Serie A season, Gori was a key player for Cagliari. He helped them win their first and only Italian league title, known as the scudetto. He often played as a supporting striker alongside the famous player Gigi Riva. Gori's great performances that season led to him being called up to play for the Italian national team in the 1970 FIFA World Cup.
Joining Juventus and Later Years
In 1975, Gori moved to Juventus. He spent two seasons there and continued his winning ways. He won his fourth Italian league title and the 1976–77 UEFA Cup (now called the UEFA Europa League) during the 1976–77 season.
He finished his top-level career with Hellas Verona F.C. in the 1977–78 season. He then played one more season with Sant'Angelo in a lower league before retiring in 1979. Sergio Gori is one of only five players to win the Serie A title with three different clubs. The other players are Giovanni Ferrari, Pietro Fanna, Aldo Serena, and Attilio Lombardo.
Playing for Italy
Sergio Gori played for the Italian national team in the 1970 FIFA World Cup. He made his debut in the quarter-final match against Mexico. Italy reached the final of that tournament. He played two more games for Italy in 1970 after the World Cup.
