Sesto San Giovanni is a city in Italy. It is located in the Lombardy region, near Milan. People often call it just Sesto. It became an official city on 10 April 1954. This was made possible by a special order signed by the Italian President, Luigi Einaudi.
History
Sesto San Giovanni was a small collection of buildings until the late 1800s. Then, it started to grow quickly. Many factories and companies opened there. Some famous ones included Falck, Campari, Magneti Marelli, and Breda.
Because of these new jobs, more people moved to Sesto. In 1880, about 5,000 people lived there. By 1911, the population grew to 14,000. After World War II, even more people came from other parts of Italy. By 1981, Sesto had about 95,000 residents.
Sesto was once called the "Stalingrad of Italy." This was because many people in the city strongly supported the Italian Communist Party. They also showed great strength in resisting fascism during World War Two.
Economy Changes
In the 1990s, Sesto San Giovanni faced a tough time. Many of its big factories closed down. The city worked hard to change its economy. It moved from making steel to offering services. Several large companies opened offices in Sesto. These included ABB Group, WIND Telecommunications, Impregilo, and Oracle Corporation.
City Leadership
For a long time, Sesto San Giovanni was known as a working-class city. Its leaders usually came from left-wing political parties. From 1946 to 2017, all the mayors were from these parties. However, in 2017, the city elected Roberto di Stefano as mayor. He was from the Lega party, which changed this long tradition.
Sport
Sesto San Giovanni has its own professional football team called Pro Sesto 1913. The club was started in 1913. In its early years, the team played in the top football league. Since then, they have played in the second and third levels of Italian football.
The team plays at the Stadio Ernesto Breda. This stadium is also used by local American football teams. In addition, Inter Milan's women's and youth teams play there.
