Aldo Serena, born on June 25, 1960, is a famous Italian former footballer. He played as a forward, which means he was a goal-scorer. Throughout his career, he played for many top Italian clubs.

He won four Serie A titles, which is Italy's top football league. He also won other important trophies. Serena achieved great success with Inter, including a league title and the UEFA Cup. He also played for the Italian national team. He was part of the team in the 1986 FIFA World Cup and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. In 1990, he helped Italy finish in third place. Today, he works as a football expert for Mediaset.

Club Career Highlights

Aldo Serena played for many Italian football clubs. These included Montebelluna, Inter, Como, Bari, A.C. Milan, Juventus and Torino. He was born in Montebelluna, where he started playing football in his hometown's youth team.

Starting Out in Football

Serena made his first professional appearance for Montebelluna in 1977. He scored nine goals in 29 games in his first season. In 1978, he joined Inter. He played his first Serie A game on November 19, scoring a goal in a 4–0 win.

During his first time at Inter, he won the Coppa Italia in 1982. However, he was often a back-up player. So, he was loaned out to other Italian clubs. He played for Como, Bari, Milan, and Torino.

Success with Juventus

Serena had a very successful two years with Juventus from 1985 to 1987. He scored 21 goals in 51 Serie A games. With Juventus, he won the 1985 Intercontinental Cup and the 1985–86 Serie A title. Overall, he scored 36 goals for Juventus in 71 games.

Return to Inter and More Trophies

Serena returned to Inter in 1987 and had even more success. His best season was in 1988–89 under coach Giovanni Trapattoni. Inter won the Scudetto (the Serie A title) with a record 58 points. Serena was the top scorer in the league that season, with 22 goals.

He also won the 1989 Supercoppa Italiana and the 1990–91 UEFA Cup with Inter. These were big achievements for the club.

Playing for Rival Clubs

After his second time at Inter, Serena moved to their local rivals, A.C. Milan, in 1991. This move was quite unusual because he had been a key player for Inter.

His first time playing for Milan was in 1983, when he was on loan. He helped them win the Serie B title and get promoted to Serie A. He scored eight goals in 20 games then. His second time with Milan, from 1991 to 1993, was not as successful for him personally. He won two more Serie A titles in 1992 and 1993, and another 1992 Supercoppa Italiana. However, he played less often due to injuries and did not score any goals in Serie A during this period. He retired from football in 1993.

Aldo Serena is one of only six footballers to win the Serie A title with three different clubs. He achieved this with Juventus, Inter, and Milan. This shows how important he was to these top teams.

International Career

Serena played for the Italy national football team in two FIFA World Cup tournaments. These were the 1986 FIFA World Cup and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The 1990 World Cup was held in Italy, and the team finished in third place. He did not play in the 1986 tournament.

He also played for the Italian under-23 team in the 1984 Summer Olympics. The team finished in fourth place. Serena made his debut for the senior Italian team on December 8, 1984. This was in a 2–0 friendly win against Poland.

He scored his first goal for Italy on February 5, 1986, in a 2–1 friendly win against West Germany. In total, he played 24 games for Italy and scored five goals.

At the 1990 World Cup, Serena scored a goal with a header. This was in Italy's 2–0 win over Uruguay on his 30th birthday, June 25. In the semi-final match against Argentina, Italy lost in a penalty shootout. Italy then won the third-place match against England 2–1, earning the bronze medal. Serena played his last game for Italy on December 22, 1990, scoring two goals in a 4–0 win over Cyprus.

Style of Play

Aldo Serena was a strong and dedicated centre-forward. He was especially good at heading the ball. He used to play as a defensive midfielder and even played basketball when he was younger.

Because of his height and strength, he could jump high and win aerial challenges. He was also good at holding the ball with his back to the goal. This helped him create space for his teammates. He could also shoot powerfully and accurately with his left foot. While he wasn't known for fancy dribbling, he improved his skills a lot during his career. He mostly played as a main striker, but he could also play as a second striker or a winger.
