Club Career Highlights
Starting Out in Football
Aldo Serena played for many Italian clubs during his career. These included Montebelluna, Inter Milan, Como, Bari, A.C. Milan, Juventus, and Torino. He was born in Montebelluna, Italy. He started playing football in his hometown's youth academy.
In 1977, he made his professional debut with Montebelluna's senior team in Serie D, a lower division. He scored nine goals in 29 games that season. The next year, in 1978, he joined Inter Milan. He played his first Serie A game on 19 November, scoring his first goal in a 4–0 win against Lazio.
Loan Spells and Success
During his first time at Inter, Serena won the Coppa Italia in 1982. However, he was mostly a backup player. He was loaned out to other Italian clubs like Como, Bari, Milan, and Torino.
He also had a very good two years with rivals Juventus from 1985 to 1987. He scored 21 goals in 51 Serie A games. With Juventus, he won the 1985 Intercontinental Cup and the 1985–86 Serie A title. In total, he scored 36 goals for Juventus in 71 games across all competitions.
Returning to Inter Milan
Serena became even more successful when he returned to Inter Milan in 1987 for his second time. His best season was in 1988–89 under coach Giovanni Trapattoni. He helped Inter win the Scudetto (the Serie A title) with a record 58 points. This was Inter's thirteenth Serie A title. Serena was also the top scorer in the league that season, with 22 goals.
He later won the 1989 Supercoppa Italiana and the 1990–91 UEFA Cup during his second time with Inter.
Moving to AC Milan
After his second move to local rivals Milan in 1991, some Inter fans were not happy. This was seen when some fans booed his name at an Inter Legends event in 2007.
His first time with Milan was successful. He helped the team win the Serie B title in 1983 and get promoted to Serie A. He scored eight goals in 20 games then. However, his second time with Milan was less successful. Even though he won another Supercoppa Italiana in 1992 and two more Serie A titles in 1992 and 1993 under coach Fabio Capello, he didn't play as much. This was because of several injuries. He only played ten games in his last two seasons and didn't score any goals in Serie A. He stopped playing professional football in 1993.
In 2005, Aldo Serena and Christian Vieri were the only players to have played for both rival teams of Turin (Juventus and Torino) and Milan (Inter and AC Milan). Serena is also one of only six players to win the Serie A title with three different clubs: Juventus, Inter, and Milan. The others are Giovanni Ferrari, Filippo Cavalli, Pietro Fanna, Sergio Gori, and Attilio Lombardo.
Playing for Italy
Serena played for the Italy national football team in two World Cups: 1986 and 1990. The 1990 World Cup was held in Italy, and the team finished in third place. He did not play in the 1986 tournament.
Serena also played for the Italian under-23 team at the 1984 Summer Olympics. The team finished in fourth place. He played his first game for Italy's senior team on 8 December 1984. It was a 2–0 friendly win against Poland. He scored his first goal for Italy on 5 February 1986, in a 2–1 friendly win against West Germany. In total, he played 24 games and scored five goals for Italy.
1990 World Cup Moment
At the 1990 World Cup, Serena scored a goal with his head on his 30th birthday. This was in Italy's 2–0 win against Uruguay in the Round of 16 on 25 June.
In the semi-final match against Argentina, he missed a penalty kick in the shootout. The goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea saved his shot. Italy lost the game on penalties after a 1–1 draw. Serena later said he didn't want to take a penalty, but his coach, Azeglio Vicini, made him the last penalty taker because no one else volunteered. Italy then won the third-place match against England 2–1, earning the bronze medal. Serena played his last game for Italy on 22 December 1990, scoring two goals in a 4–0 win over Cyprus.
How Aldo Serena Played
Aldo Serena was a strong, dedicated, and athletic centre-forward. He was especially good at heading the ball. In his youth, he played as a defensive midfielder and was also a basketball player. Because of his height and strength, he was known for his powerful and accurate headers.
He also had good positioning and played with a lot of energy. He could shield the ball from defenders and create space for himself. Even though he wasn't the fastest player, he was good at anticipating what opponents would do. He could also finish well with his powerful and accurate left-footed shot. While he wasn't known for fancy footwork, he improved his technical skills over his career. He mostly played as a striker in the penalty area, but he was also versatile. He could play as a second striker or even as a winger.
