Sessel Mountain is a tall mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It stands about 2,746 meters (9,009 feet) high. This makes it one of the highest points in the Thiassi Range, a part of the larger Coast Mountains.
Sessel Mountain is located in the southwestern part of British Columbia. It is about 46 kilometers (29 miles) northwest of a town called Pemberton. The mountain is also quite close to Mount Sampson, which is an even taller peak nearby.
The name "Sessel" comes from a German word meaning "armchair." A mountaineer named Karl Ricker from the Alpine Club of Canada suggested this name. He thought the mountain looked like an armchair. The name was officially accepted on January 23, 1979. The first time someone successfully climbed to the top of Sessel Mountain was in 1974. This climb was done by John Clarke.
There is an icefield on the north side of the mountain. An icefield is a large area of ice that feeds glaciers. On the south side, you can find the Boomerang Glacier. Water from the mountain flows into the Lillooet and Hurley Rivers.
Weather at Sessel Mountain
Sessel Mountain is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Most of the weather in this area comes from the Pacific Ocean.
When weather fronts move east from the ocean, they hit the Coast Mountains. The mountains force the air to rise. As the air goes higher, it cools down and drops its moisture. This process is called Orographic lift. It causes a lot of rain or snow to fall on the Coast Mountains.
Because of this, Sessel Mountain gets a lot of precipitation, especially snow in winter. Temperatures can get very cold, sometimes dropping below -20°C (-4°F). With the wind, it can feel even colder, below -30°C (-22°F). The best time to climb Sessel Mountain is usually from July to September. During these months, the weather is more favorable for outdoor activities.
