Island Geography: Where is Seven Mile Island?
Seven Mile Island is a barrier island located along the Atlantic Ocean. It has water on both sides! To its northeast is Townsends Inlet. To its southwest is Hereford Inlet.
Between Seven Mile Island and the mainland, you'll find a big area of salt marsh and tidal channels. These are like watery paths. They separate the island from other sounds like Great Sound and Jenkins Sound.
In 1834, people described the island as about half a mile wide. It stretched from Townsend's Inlet to Hereford Inlet.
Later, in 1878, it was sometimes called Tatham's Beach. At that time, it was one of the most wooded beaches. It had many trees like oak and red cedar.
