Sgòr Gaoith is a tall mountain in Scotland, part of the amazing Cairngorms mountain range. Its name means "Peak of the Wind" in Scottish Gaelic. This gives you an idea of how windy it can be up there! Sgòr Gaoith is known for its dramatic cliffs and beautiful views.

Discovering Sgòr Gaoith

Sgòr Gaoith is located in the western part of the Cairngorms. It is separated from another large mountain, Braeriach, by a wide valley called Glen Einich. The mountain has a second-highest point nearby. This point is called Sgoran Dubh Mòr. It stands at 1,111 meters tall.

Mountain Features

The eastern side of Sgòr Gaoith has very steep cliffs. These cliffs drop sharply down to a lake called Loch Einich. On the western side, you will find gentler slopes. These slopes are covered in heather plants. There are also some small, shallow valleys called corries.

Climbing Sgòr Gaoith

Most people start their climb up Sgòr Gaoith from Glen Feshie. This area is to the west of the mountain. There are two main ways to reach the top.

Route One: Through the Woods

One path starts in the pine woods. It follows a track that leads up into an area called Coire Ruadh. From there, you follow less clear paths to the summit. This route offers a journey through different types of landscapes.

Route Two: Via Carn Ban Mòr

Another way to climb starts a bit further south in Glen Feshie. You can find a car park just before a farm called Achlean. This route takes you up a lower peak first. This peak is named Carn Ban Mòr and is 1,052 meters high. After reaching Carn Ban Mòr, you continue to the main summit of Sgòr Gaoith.
