Shady Side is a community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP) because it is a special area used for gathering population information. In 2020, about 5,806 people lived there.
History of Shady Side
Early Days and Historic Buildings
In the 1790s, the area now known as Shady Side was called the Great Swamp. Over time, it grew into the community we know today.
Shady Side is home to some important old buildings. One of these is the Capt. Salem Avery House. This house was built in 1860. It is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This list includes places that are special because of their history or architecture.
Another historic building is the Lula G. Scott Community Center. This center was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
Travel by Steamboat
Years ago, people could travel to Shady Side by a special boat called a sidewheel passenger steamer. A famous steamer named Emma Giles used to travel from Baltimore to Shady Side. It would make trips up to five times a week, helping people get around.

Where is Shady Side Located?
Shady Side is in the southern part of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It sits right on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The community is located at coordinates 38 degrees 50 minutes 6 seconds North and 76 degrees 31 minutes 2 seconds West.
To the north and west of Shady Side is the West River. This is a wide inlet of the Chesapeake Bay where the tide comes in. To the south, you'll find the community of Deale. Across the West River to the west is Galesville.
How to Get Around
The main road serving Shady Side is Maryland Route 468, also known as Shady Side Road. This road goes south, then west, then north towards the Annapolis area. The center of Annapolis is about 20 miles (32 km) north by road. If you travel by water, it's about 14 miles (23 km) north.
Land and Water Area
According to the United States Census Bureau, Shady Side covers a total area of about 7.9 square miles (20.7 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 6.8 square miles (17.5 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 1.2 square miles (3.2 square kilometers), is water. This means that about 15.57% of Shady Side is covered by water.
