He worked in different government roles, including as a sub-divisional officer and a deputy commissioner.
In 1960, he moved to the judicial branch, which deals with laws and courts. He served as a judge in different cities like Dhaka, Barisal, Comilla, and Chittagong. In 1967, he became a registrar of the High Court in what was then East Pakistan. On January 20, 1972, he became a judge of the High Court.

After this, Ahmed was chosen by all political parties to lead a special temporary government. This government's main job was to make sure a fair election could happen. He became the acting President of the country. He formed his team of advisors on December 9, 1990.
After the national election on February 27, 1991, Ahmed handed over power to the new Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia. He then resigned as president on October 9, 1991. The next day, he returned to his job as chief justice. He retired from this role on February 1, 1995.
