Muhammad Habibur Rahman (born December 3, 1928 – died January 11, 2014) was an important Bangladeshi politician and judge. He served as the top judge, known as the Chief Justice, of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. This was from March 31 to June 23, 1996. He was also the first Chief Advisor of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh in 1996.

Early Life and Education

Muhammad Habibur Rahman was born in 1928 in Murshidabad. This area was part of undivided India at the time. Today, it is in West Bengal, India.

He finished his higher secondary education in Kolkata. Later, his family moved to Rajshahi. He earned his BA honours degree from Rajshahi College.

He then studied at University of Dhaka. He completed his BA Honours in History in 1949 and his MA in History in 1951. He also earned a law degree (LLB) from Dhaka University. Later, he went to the University of Oxford in England. There, he earned another BA Honours in 1958 and an MA in Modern History in 1962.

Career in Education

Habibur Rahman started his career as a history lecturer. He taught at Dhaka University starting May 1, 1952. However, he had to leave his job just four days later. This was because he took part in the Bengali Language Movement.

He also taught history at Sirajganj College and Jagannath University. Later, he joined University of Rajshahi. At Rajshahi University, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Law in 1961. He also worked as a Reader in History from 1962 to 1964.

Journey in Law

In 1964, Habibur Rahman changed his career. He decided to become a lawyer and joined the Dhaka High Court Bar. During his time as a lawyer, he held several important positions.

He was an Assistant Advocate General in 1969. He also became the Vice President of the High Court Bar Association in 1972. This association is now known as the Supreme Court Bar Association. He was also a member of the Bangladesh Bar Council in 1972.

He served as a Judge of the High Court Division from 1976 to 1985. Then, he became a Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh from 1985 to 1995. He was also an Acting Chief Justice from 1990 to 1991. Finally, he became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 1995. Justice Habibur Rahman retired from his service as Chief Justice in 1995.

His skills as a judge were clear in his decisions. He gave important opinions on many big issues. These included topics like citizenship and how the Constitution could be changed. He also attended many international meetings for judges. These included conferences in Australia, Nigeria, and Nepal.

Scholarly Contributions

Muhammad Habibur Rahman was also a talented researcher and writer. He made many important contributions to literature and other fields. This noted scholar wrote about 70 books. These books covered topics like law, language, literature, and religion.

Justice Rahman received the Bangla Academy award in 1984 for his writing. He also received the Ekushey Padak in 2007. He was a fellow of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. He was also a fellow of the Bangla Academy.

Political Involvement

While studying at Dhaka University, he was active in student politics. He was the vice-president of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall Students’ Council in 1951. He played a very important role in the 1952 Bengali Language Movement.

On February 21, 1952, he was arrested. This happened when he joined a procession that went against a ban by the Pakistani rulers. Many others were also arrested that day.

After retiring as Chief Justice, he took on another big role. He became the first Chief Advisor of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh. This happened from March 31 to June 23, 1996. His job was to oversee the national elections.

Later Life and Passing

Muhammad Habibur Rahman passed away on January 11, 2014. He was 84 years old. Doctors declared him dead upon arrival at United Hospital in Dhaka.
