Shakeel Badayuni (born August 3, 1916 – died April 20, 1970) was a famous Indian poet and songwriter. He wrote many popular songs for Bollywood movies in Hindi and Urdu languages. His words touched the hearts of many people.

Early Life and Love for Poetry

Shakeel Badayuni was born in Badaun, a city in Uttar Pradesh, India. His father, Mohammed Jamaal Ahmed Sokhta Qadiri, wanted him to have a great career. So, he arranged for Shakeel to learn Arabic, Urdu, Persian, and Hindi at home.

Shakeel's love for poetry was not something he inherited. However, a distant relative, Zia-ul-Qadiri Badayuni, was a religious poet. Shakeel was inspired by him and the poetic atmosphere of Badaun. This led him to start writing his own poems.

College Days and Early Fame

In 1936, Shakeel joined Aligarh Muslim University. There, he began taking part in poetry competitions (called mushairas) between colleges and universities. He often won these competitions, showing his talent early on.

In 1940, he married Salma, who was a distant relative. They had known each other since childhood. After finishing his college degree, he moved to Delhi for a job as a supply officer. Even with his job, he kept attending mushairas and became famous across the country.

At that time, many poets wrote about social issues and helping the poor. But Shakeel had a different style. His poems were mostly about love and feelings, which made them very special. Shakeel used to say:

Main Shakeel Dil Ka Hoon Tarjuman
Keh Mohabbaton Ka Hoon Raazdaan
Mujhe Fakhr Hai Meri Shayari
Meri Zindagi Se Juda Nahin

This means: "I, Shakeel, am the voice of the heart, a confidant of love. I am proud that my poetry is not separate from my life." During his time at Aligarh, he also formally learned Urdu poetry from Hakim Abdul Waheed 'Ashk' Bijnori.

Career in Films

In 1944, Shakeel moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) to write songs for movies. He met film producer A.R. Kardar and music composer Naushad Ali. They asked him to show his poetic skills in just one line.

Shakeel wrote: Hum Dard Ka Afsana Duniya Ko Suna Denge, Har Dil Main Mohabbat Ki Ek Aag Laga Dengey. This means: "We will tell the world the story of pain, we will light a fire of love in every heart." Naushad was very impressed and hired him for Kardar's film, Dard (1947).

The songs from Dard became very popular, especially "Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon" sung by Uma Devi (Tun Tun). Shakeel was one of the lucky few who found success with their very first film. His success began with Dard and continued for many years.

Working with Naushad

Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad Ali became one of the most successful composer and lyricist teams in the film industry. They created many hit songs together for 24 years. Some of their most famous films include Deedar (1951), Baiju Bawra (1952), Mother India (1957), and Mughal-e-Azam (1960).

Other films they worked on together were Dulari (1949), Shabab (1954), Ganga Jamuna (1961), and Mere Mehboob (1963).

Shakeel and Naushad were very close friends. When Shakeel was diagnosed with tuberculosis, Naushad helped him financially. He brought three film projects to Shakeel while he was recovering, ensuring he received much more than his usual fees.

Collaborations with Other Composers

Even though Shakeel Badayuni worked mostly with Naushad, he also wrote songs for other talented music composers.

With Ravi

Shakeel wrote many songs for music director Ravi Sharma. Their notable films include Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Gharana (1961), Ghunghat, Grahasti (1963), Nartaki (1963), Phool Aur Patthar, and Do Badan (both 1966).

His lyrics for the song "Husnwale Tera Jawab Nahin" from Gharana won him a Filmfare Award. The title song from Chaudhvin Ka Chand, sung by Mohammed Rafi, also earned him a Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist in 1961.

With Hemant Kumar

Shakeel also wrote for Hemant Kumar in movies like Bees Saal Baad (1962), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), and Bin Badal Barsaat. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam was a very big hit for them.

With S.D. Burman and Others

He also penned lyrics for S.D. Burman in films like Kaise Kahoon and Benazir. He worked with C. Ramachandra for Zindagi Aur Maut and Wahan Ke Log, and with Roshan for Bedaag and Noorjahan.

Shakeel wrote songs for about 89 films in total. He also wrote many popular ghazals (a type of poem) that were sung by famous artists like Begum Akhtar. These ghazals are still sung by singers today. The Indian government honored him with the title Geet Kar-e-Azam, which means "Greatest Songwriter."

Personal Life and Hobbies

Shakeel Badayuni passed away on April 20, 1970, at the age of 53, due to health issues related to diabetes. He left behind his wife, two sons, and two daughters. Sadly, one of his daughters, Najma, passed away soon after while still in college. His elder son, Javed, and grandson, Zeeshan, work in the travel industry. His other son's name is Tariq.

After his death, Shakeel's friends Ahmed Zakaria and Rangoonwala created a trust called Yaad-e-Shakeel (Memory of Shakeel). This trust helped his family financially.

Shakeel enjoyed playing badminton, going on picnics, and hunting trips. He also loved flying kites with his friends from the film industry, including Naushad and Mohammed Rafi. Sometimes, actor Johnny Walker would join them for kite-flying competitions. Other close friends included actor Dilip Kumar and writers Wajahat Mirza, Khumar Barabankvi, and Azm Bazidpuri.
