About Shaun Morgan's Early Life
Shaun Morgan grew up in South Africa. His parents divorced when he was young. He has two siblings: a brother named Eugene and a sister named Lucy. Shaun went to Merchiston Preparatory School and Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg.
He was a good rugby player in high school. But after a back injury, he could not play anymore. This led him to focus on his love for playing the guitar. When he was 14, he heard Nirvana's Nevermind album. This music, called grunge from Seattle, inspired him to become a musician.
Shaun Morgan's Music Career
Before starting the band Saron Gas, Shaun played in a band that covered songs by other artists. In May 1999, he formed the band Saron Gas. They started as a three-piece band with Shaun as the lead singer and guitarist.
Saron Gas became quite popular. In January 2000, their bass player left. Shaun then asked Dale Stewart, another good bass player, to join. The band released an album called Fragile later that year.
In January 2002, the band moved to the United States. They signed with a record company called Wind-up Records. The band's first drummer went back to South Africa. Shaun and Dale needed a new band name for Wind-up Records. They chose the name Seether, inspired by a song by the band Veruca Salt. Around this time, Shaun started using his middle name, Morgan, as his last name for his music career. This was because "Welgemoed" was hard for some Americans to say.
Seether released their first major album, Disclaimer, on 20 August 2002. They later remixed and re-released it as Disclaimer II in 2004.
Since then, Seether has released many more studio albums:
- Karma and Effect (2005)
- Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces (2007)
- Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray (2011)
- Isolate and Medicate (2014)
- Poison the Parish (2017)
- Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum (2020)
They also released a live CD/DVD called One Cold Night in 2006.
In 2013, Shaun worked with the famous band Lynyrd Skynyrd and guitarist John 5. They made a song called "Sad Song" for Lynyrd Skynyrd's album Last of a Dyin' Breed.
Shaun Morgan has been influenced by many bands. Some of these include Nirvana, Portishead, Silverchair, The Beatles, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Mad Season, Rage Against the Machine, Black Sabbath, Korn, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Deftones.
Shaun Morgan's Music Gear
Shaun Morgan was first offered a special guitar model from PRS. But he chose to work with Schecter Guitars early in his career. He used Schecter guitars until 2019. Now, he plays an Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay RS guitar.
Shaun Morgan's Personal Life
From 2003 to 2005, Shaun Morgan dated Evanescence singer Amy Lee.
Shaun's brother, Eugene, passed away in 2007. Seether's album Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces was released a few weeks later. The album was dedicated to Eugene. The song "Rise Above This" by Seether is also a tribute to Eugene. Shaun has the numbers 1308 tattooed on his right fingers and 2007 on his left fingers. These numbers mark the date his brother passed away.
In May 2021, Shaun married his longtime partner, Jordan Kirby. They have a daughter together. Shaun Morgan is an atheist.
