Shawn Anthony Chacón (born December 23, 1977) is a former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for several teams, including the Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Houston Astros. Shawn Chacón is currently the manager of the Trenton Thunder team in the MLB Draft League.

Shawn Chacón's Early Life and Baseball Start

Shawn Chacón was born in Anchorage, Alaska. When he was four years old, he was adopted by Tony and Blanca Chacón in Greeley, Colorado. Shawn was a talented baseball player. He was chosen by the Colorado Rockies in the third round of the 1996 amateur draft. He decided to play professionally instead of going to college. He officially signed with the Rockies on June 18, 1996.

Shawn Chacón's Professional Baseball Career

Playing for the Colorado Rockies

Shawn Chacón made his first appearance in Major League Baseball in 2001 with the Colorado Rockies. In his very first game as a starting pitcher, he helped his team win 14–7. By the end of the 2001 season, Chacón had started 27 games. He finished with a record of 6 wins and 10 losses for the Rockies.

In 2002, Shawn Chacón faced some challenges. He dealt with injuries and had some ups and downs in his performance. He started 13 games in the first half of the season. After returning from an injury, his performance became more difficult. He was sent to a lower league (AAA) and finished the season with 5 wins and 11 losses.

In 2003, Chacón was chosen to represent the Rockies in the All-Star Game. He had won 11 games before the All-Star break, which was a great achievement. However, he couldn't pitch in the All-Star game because of an elbow injury. After the break, he struggled and was later rested for the rest of the season. He finished 2003 with 11 wins and 8 losses.

For the 2004 season, Chacón became the Rockies' closer. A closer is a pitcher who finishes games. He recorded 35 saves, which is when a pitcher protects a lead. However, he also had 9 "blown saves," meaning he lost the lead in those games. His overall record was 1 win and 9 losses. In 2005, Chacón was traded to the New York Yankees during the season. He had played five years with the Rockies, finishing with 24 wins and 45 losses.

Playing for the New York Yankees

In July 2005, the Rockies traded Chacón to the New York Yankees. Many fans and reporters in New York were unsure about the trade at first. However, Chacón was excited to join the Yankees. In his first game for them, he pitched six innings without allowing any runs. He finished the season with the Yankees with 7 wins and 3 losses.

Shawn Chacón also played in the postseason for the first time in 2005. He pitched well in a game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, helping the Yankees win. In 2006, Chacón had a slow start to the season. After a difficult game in July, he was moved from being a starting pitcher to pitching out of the bullpen.

Playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates

On July 31, 2006, Chacón was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He started nine games for the Pirates, winning 2 and losing 3. In 2007, Chacón was mostly used as a relief pitcher by the Pirates. He pitched in 64 games, winning 5 and losing 4. After the 2007 season, Chacón became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.

Playing for the Houston Astros

On February 20, 2008, Shawn Chacón signed a one-year contract with the Houston Astros. On May 16, he set a unique record by having 9 games in a row where he didn't get a win or a loss.

On June 25, 2008, the Astros announced that Chacón was suspended. This happened after an incident with the Astros' General Manager, Ed Wade. Chacón's contract was later ended. He did not pitch again in 2008.

Playing for the Newark Bears and Oakland Athletics

On May 1, 2009, Chacón signed with the Newark Bears, a team in the Atlantic League. He pitched well enough to earn a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics organization on June 18, 2009. He played for their Triple-A team, the Sacramento River Cats.

Shawn Chacón's Coaching Career

Shawn Chacón began his coaching career in 2022. He joined the Trenton Thunder of the MLB Draft League as their pitching coach. He continued in that role until he was promoted to be the manager of the Thunder team in 2025.
