Shawn Richard Hill, born on April 28, 1981, is a Canadian former professional baseball player. He was a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for teams like the Montreal Expos, Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays. Shawn also represented Team Canada at the 2004 Summer Olympics, where his team finished fourth.

Shawn Hill's Early Baseball Days
High School and Draft Picks
Shawn Hill played high school baseball at Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School. This school is located in Milton, Ontario, Canada.
He was first picked by the San Diego Padres in the 1999 MLB draft. This was in the 33rd round, but he did not sign with them. The next year, in the 2000 MLB draft, the Montreal Expos drafted him. They picked him in the sixth round.
Playing in the Minor Leagues
Shawn played 82 games in the minor leagues. He had a record of 32 wins and 24 losses. His earned run average (ERA) was 3.16 over five seasons. An ERA shows how many earned runs a pitcher gives up per nine innings.
He also showed he could hit, getting four hits in 14 times at bat. This included two home runs. In 2003, Shawn played in the All-Star Futures Game for the World team.
Shawn Hill's Major League Career
Starting with the Expos and Nationals
Shawn Hill made his first MLB appearance on June 29, 2004. He played against the Philadelphia Phillies. His team, the Montreal Expos, lost that game.
On July 4, 2004, Shawn was the winning pitcher in a special game. It was the last time two Canadian MLB teams played each other. The Expos beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4. This game was played in San Juan, Puerto Rico, because the Expos played some home games there.
Shawn missed all of 2005 because he had Tommy John surgery. This is a surgery to repair a ligament in the elbow. He returned to play for the Washington Nationals on May 27, 2006. He pitched well in that game, allowing only one run.
In 2007, Shawn started as a top pitcher for the Nationals. He often pitched six or more innings and allowed very few runs. On May 11, he pitched five innings without giving up any hits. However, he had to leave the game due to elbow soreness. He returned to play on August 14.
Shawn's 2008 season was also cut short by injuries. He had surgery on his right elbow in September 2008. The Nationals released him on March 18, 2009.
Time with the San Diego Padres
Shawn signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres on March 23, 2009. He only pitched in three games for them.
On June 24, 2009, Shawn had his second Tommy John surgery. He was released by the Padres later that year.
Playing for the Toronto Blue Jays
On January 22, 2010, Shawn signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. He played very well in the minor leagues that year. He had a 1.61 ERA in 11 starts.
On September 6, 2010, Shawn was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays. He started a game on September 9, which was his first major league game in over two years. He finished the season with a 1-2 record. On November 15, 2010, the Blue Jays released him. Shawn is one of only four Canadian players to have played for both the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Expos.
Brief Stint with the Florida Marlins
On January 24, 2011, Shawn signed a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins. He pitched in only four spring training games before being released on April 2. He did not play for any team in 2011.
Playing for the York Revolution
On May 5, 2012, Shawn signed with the York Revolution. This team is part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, which is an independent league. He played well, with a 2-0 record and a 2.43 ERA in seven games.
Second Time with the Toronto Blue Jays
On June 18, 2012, the Blue Jays signed Shawn Hill to another minor league contract. He was called up to the major league team on September 24. After the season, he chose to become a free agent instead of going to the Blue Jays' Triple-A team.

More Stints in Independent and Minor Leagues
Shawn returned to the York Revolution on March 21, 2014, but did not play a game. He then signed with the Toronto Blue Jays for a third time on March 24, 2014. He played for their Double-A and Triple-A teams.
On June 11, 2014, the Blue Jays traded Shawn to the Chicago White Sox. He played for their Triple-A team before being released. He then signed with the Detroit Tigers for a second time on August 12, 2014. He became a free agent in November 2014.
Shawn signed with the York Revolution for a third time on April 3, 2015. He played 17 games that season before becoming a free agent.

Shawn Hill was known as a sinker/slider pitcher. When he was healthy, he often made batters hit ground balls. More than 50% of the balls hit against him were on the ground.

Shawn is married to Ashley Jenne. They live in Viera, Florida, during the off-season. Shawn and Ashley have two daughters and one son.
