Shawn Richard Hill, born on April 28, 1981, is a Canadian former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for several teams. These include the Montreal Expos (who later became the Washington Nationals), the San Diego Padres, and the Toronto Blue Jays. Shawn also proudly represented Team Canada at the 2004 Summer Olympics, where his team finished in fourth place.

Shawn Hill's Early Baseball Days

Shawn Hill played baseball during his high school years. He attended Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School in Milton, Ontario, Canada.

Playing in the Minor Leagues

Shawn was first chosen by the San Diego Padres in the 1999 MLB draft. However, he decided not to sign with them. The very next year, the Montreal Expos drafted him. He was picked in the sixth round.

In his minor league career, Shawn played 82 games. He had a record of 32 wins and 24 losses. His earned run average (ERA) was 3.16 over five seasons. This shows he was a very good pitcher. Shawn also got four hits, including two home runs, in 14 times at bat. In 2003, he played in the All-Star Futures Game for the World team.

Shawn Hill's Major League Career

Playing for the Montreal Expos and Washington Nationals

Shawn Hill made his first appearance in Major League Baseball on June 29, 2004. He played against the Philadelphia Phillies. In this game, he pitched for a short time.

On July 4, 2004, Shawn was the winning pitcher in a special game. It was the last time two Canadian MLB teams played each other. The Expos beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4. This game was played in Puerto Rico. Shawn finished his 2004 season with one win and two losses.

Shawn missed all of the 2005 season. He had a surgery called Tommy John surgery to fix his arm. He was also on the list for the 2006 World Baseball Classic but did not play. He returned to pitch for the Washington Nationals on May 27, 2006. He pitched well, allowing only one run. However, his season was cut short again due to another injury.

In 2007, Shawn started as a top pitcher for the Nationals. He often pitched six or more innings. He also allowed very few runs in his games. On May 11, he had to leave a game early because of elbow pain. This put him on the disabled list. He returned on August 14 and pitched a great game. He allowed only one hit and struck out seven batters.

Time with the San Diego Padres

Shawn signed a new contract with the San Diego Padres on March 23, 2009. However, he only pitched in three games for them.

On June 24, 2009, Shawn had his second Tommy John surgery. This is a major surgery for pitchers. He was released by the Padres in October.

First Time with the Toronto Blue Jays

On January 22, 2010, Shawn signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. He spent most of 2010 playing in the minor leagues. He pitched very well for the Blue Jays' minor league teams. His ERA was 1.61 in 11 starts.

On September 6, 2010, Shawn was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays. This was his first time playing in the major leagues in over two years. He pitched well, but his team lost the game. Shawn finished the season with one win and two losses. He had a 2.61 ERA in four games. On November 15, 2010, the Blue Jays released him. Shawn is one of only four Canadian players to have played for both the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Expos.

Playing for the Florida Marlins

Shawn Hill's Pitching Style

Shawn Hill was known as a "sinker/slider" pitcher. This means he mainly threw two types of pitches: a sinker and a slider. When he was healthy, more than half of the balls hit against him were groundballs. This shows his pitches were effective at getting batters to hit the ball downwards.
