Shawnee is a small, quiet community in Park County, Colorado, United States. It is not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it is an unincorporated community. Shawnee is also known for its historic district, which is a special area listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This means it has important historical buildings and places.

Shawnee is located next to the North Fork South Platte River. You can find it west of Bailey along U.S. Route 285.

The historic area of Shawnee includes several interesting spots. These are Time Capsule Framing & Art, Shawnee Mountain Gallery, and the local post office. You can also find the Shawnee Cemetery and many old houses. These buildings are on a hillside that looks over the river valley.

How Did Shawnee Get Its Name?
Shawnee has had a few different names over the years.
Early Names for the Community
A post office first opened here on September 13, 1878. It was called Fairville back then. Later, on February 23, 1882, the post office name changed to Slaghts.
Becoming Shawnee
On April 19, 1900, the post office moved about half a mile. At that time, its name was changed to Shawnee. The community got its name from a nearby mountain called Shawnee Peak.
Shawnee's Historic Status
The Shawnee Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 8, 2010. This helps protect its important historical buildings and sites.
