Shelby Lynne (born Shelby Lynn Moorer, October 22, 1968) is an American singer and songwriter. She is also the older sister of singer-songwriter Allison Moorer. Shelby Lynne became very famous after her pop rock album I Am Shelby Lynne was released in 1999. Even though it was her sixth album, she won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

In 2008, she released Just a Little Lovin', which was a tribute album to the singer Dusty Springfield. After that, she started her own record label called Everso Records. She has released several albums on her own label. Shelby Lynne is also known for her unique, deep singing voice.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Shelby Lynne was born in Quantico, Virginia. She grew up in Jackson, Alabama, and later in Mobile, Alabama. Music was a very important part of her family's life. Her father led a local band, and her mother taught harmony singing.

As children, Shelby and her younger sister Allison Moorer sometimes sang with their parents on stage. Allison later became a country music artist too. When Shelby was 17, her parents passed away. This was a very difficult time for her and her sister.

Shelby Lynne's Music Career

Starting Out in Music

Shelby Lynne first appeared on a country music TV show called Nashville Now in 1987. Soon after, she signed a record deal with Epic Records. Her first song for Epic was a duet with George Jones called "If I Could Bottle This Up." It became a popular song in 1988.

She released her first album, Sunrise, in 1989. Her next albums, Tough All Over (1990) and Soft Talk (1991), explored different country music styles.

During this time, many of her songs appeared on the country music charts. Critics thought she was a very promising new artist. In 1991, she won the Academy of Country Music Award for New Female Artist of the Year. She was chosen over other talented singers like Carlene Carter.

Shelby Lynne wanted more control over her music and image. She left Epic Records and signed with a smaller label, Morgan Creek. In 1993, she released Temptation, which had a Western swing and big band jazz sound. After that label closed, she moved to Magnatone and released Restless in 1995. This album brought her back to a more modern country style.

Becoming a Star

In 1998, Shelby Lynne moved to Palm Springs, California. She worked with producer Bill Bottrell on her next album. This album was I Am Shelby Lynne, released in 1999 in the U.K. and 2000 in the U.S. It was a mix of pop rock and blues music. Critics loved the album.

At the 43rd Grammy Awards in 2001, she won the award for Grammy Award for Best New Artist. She famously said, "Thirteen years and six albums to get here," during her acceptance speech. One of her songs, "Dreamsome," was even featured in the movie Bridget Jones's Diary.

Her next album, Love, Shelby (2001), had a more pop sound. In 2003, she released Identity Crisis, which she produced herself. She recorded most of it in her home studio. This album received high praise from critics. Her 2005 album, Suit Yourself, also got good reviews.

After some disagreements with her record label, Shelby Lynne decided to start her own label called Everso Records. She wanted more freedom with her music. Her first album on Everso was Tears, Lies and Alibis (2010). Later that year, she released a holiday album called Merry Christmas. In 2011, she released Revelation Road, where she played all the instruments herself.

On August 18, 2017, Shelby Lynne released a special album with her sister Allison Moorer. It was called Not Dark Yet. This album featured cover versions of songs by artists like Bob Dylan and Nirvana, plus one new song.

Other Projects and Acting Roles
