Sheldon W. Brookbank, born on October 3, 1980, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played as a defenceman in the National Hockey League (NHL). After his playing career, he became an assistant coach for teams like the Chicago Blackhawks.

Sheldon Brookbank's Hockey Journey
Sheldon Brookbank started his hockey career playing for the Humboldt Broncos in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He played there for three seasons before becoming a professional player.
Early Professional Years
His first professional team was the Mississippi Sea Wolves in the ECHL. After that, he spent two seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.
Later, Brookbank signed with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He played two seasons with their AHL team, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. In August 2005, he signed a contract with the Nashville Predators.
Becoming an AHL Star
During the 2005–06 season, Brookbank played for the Milwaukee Admirals, the Predators' AHL team. He scored 9 goals and had 35 points. He also spent 232 minutes in the penalty box.
In the 2006–07 season, Brookbank became the captain of the Admirals. He also got his first chance to play in the NHL with the Predators. He played in 3 NHL games, getting 1 assist. That season, he won the Eddie Shore Award as the best defenceman in the AHL. He was also named an AHL First Team All-Star. He led all defencemen in the AHL with 53 points.
Playing in the NHL
On July 2, 2007, Brookbank signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He then joined the New Jersey Devils on October 2, 2007. He played 44 games with the Devils in the 2007–08 season and had 8 assists.
In February 2009, Brookbank was traded back to the Anaheim Ducks. He finished that season with one goal and three assists.
During the 2009–10 season, Brookbank played 66 NHL games for the Ducks. He was known for his strong defensive play. On June 2, 2010, he signed a new two-year contract with the Ducks.
Brookbank played a career-high 80 games in the 2011–12 season. He scored his best numbers that year with 3 goals and 11 assists. On July 1, 2012, he signed a two-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks. He then helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2013, which is one of hockey's biggest achievements!
Playing Overseas
After his time with the Blackhawks, Brookbank became a free agent. He tried out for the Calgary Flames but was not signed. He then decided to play hockey in other countries.
On October 31, 2014, he signed a one-year contract with Ak Bars Kazan in Russia's KHL. The next season, he moved to Finland and played for Lukko in the Liiga league. He played 38 games for Lukko, getting 4 points.
In October 2016, Brookbank returned to North America. He signed a try-out contract with the Cleveland Monsters, an AHL team. He played 6 games and had one assist before his try-out ended in December 2016.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Sheldon Brookbank started coaching. On June 14, 2017, he became an assistant coach for the Rockford Ice Hogs. This team is the minor league affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks.
On January 4, 2019, he was promoted to an assistant coach for the Chicago Blackhawks' main team. He worked there until November 6, 2021. Currently, he is an assistant coach for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Family Connections
Sheldon Brookbank has a brother named Wade Brookbank, who also played professional hockey. Wade last played for the Rockford IceHogs. Sheldon is also the cousin of former NHL player Geoff Sanderson.
