Shelia Burrell was born on January 15, 1972, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is an American sports coach and a former heptathlete. A heptathlete is an athlete who competes in seven different track and field events.

Shelia is currently the head coach for the women's cross country and track & field teams at San Diego State University (SDSU). She competed for the United States at the Summer Olympics twice, in 2000 and 2004. Her best Olympic finish was fourth place. She also won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Athletics in 2001. Shelia also earned two silver medals at the 1999 Pan American Games. Her personal best score in the heptathlon was 6472 points. She was also the American national champion four times.

On the professional sports circuit, Shelia won the 2002 Hypo-Meeting, which is a big international competition for multi-event athletes. She had also placed fourth at this event in 1999 and 2000. In 2001, she won the Décastar competition in France.

Shelia studied English and American studies at UCLA. Her coaches included Bob Kersee, Jane Frederick, and later Cliff Rovelto. She is not related to other famous track athletes named Leroy Burrell or Dawn Burrell.
