Shelia Burrell was born on January 15, 1972, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is an American athletics coach and a former athlete. Shelia used to compete in a sport called the heptathlon. Today, she is the head coach for the women's cross country and track & field teams at San Diego State University (SDSU).
Shelia Burrell represented the United States at the Summer Olympics twice. She competed in the Olympic Games in 2000 and 2004. Her best finish at the Olympics was fourth place. She also competed in the World Championships in Athletics two times. At the 2001 World Championships, she won a bronze medal. Shelia also earned two silver medals at the 1999 Pan American Games. Her best score in the heptathlon was 6472 points. She was also the American national champion four times.
On the professional sports circuit, Shelia won the 2002 Hypo-Meeting. This is a big competition for athletes who do multiple events. She had also finished fourth at the Hypo-Meeting in 1999 and 2000. In 2001, she won another important competition called the Décastar in France.
Shelia studied English and American studies at UCLA. While she was there, she was coached by Bob Kersee. Later, she was coached by Jane Frederick and then by Cliff Rovelto.
