Shelter Island is a small community in Suffolk County, New York. It is called a hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a small area with a name, used for counting people. In 2020, about 1,602 people lived here.
Shelter Island is located on an island between the North and South Forks of Long Island. The only way to get there is by ferry. Many people who live in New York City own homes here.
