Shen Yi-ming (Chinese: 沈一鳴; Wade–Giles: Shen I-ming; 30 March 1957 – 2 January 2020) was an important military leader in Taiwan. He was a general in the Republic of China Air Force and held several top positions. These included being the head of all armed forces, a Deputy Minister of National Defense, and the Commander of the Air Force.
Sadly, he died in a helicopter accident during a regular mission in 2020.

Early Life and Education
Shen Yi-ming was born in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1957. He studied at the Republic of China Air Force Academy, graduating in 1979. Later, he continued his military education at the Air Command and Staff College in 1992. He also attended the Air War College in the United States in 2002.
Military Career Highlights
Shen Yi-ming had a long and impressive career in the Air Force. He was part of a special program where he trained in Saudi Arabia for a year.
In the 1990s, when Taiwan got new Mirage 2000-5 jets from France, Shen was one of the first pilots trained to fly them. This showed his skill and importance.
He held many important roles in the Air Force, including:
- Deputy Commander of Intelligence
- Deputy Chief of the Air Force Staff
- Commanding General of the Air Force (from 2015 to 2018)
Key Leadership Roles
Deputy Defense Minister
In March 2018, Shen became the Deputy Minister of Defense for Policy. In this role, he worked to improve military connections with the United States. He believed it was good that the U.S. was willing to sell military equipment to Taiwan based on specific needs.
Soon after, Taiwan signed a deal to upgrade 144 F-16 fighter jets. This was a big step in strengthening Taiwan's defense.
Chief of the General Staff
In July 2019, Shen Yi-ming became the Chief of the General Staff of the Republic of China Armed Forces. This meant he was the highest-ranking military officer in Taiwan.
Tragic Accident
On January 2, 2020, General Shen Yi-ming was killed in a helicopter accident. He was traveling in a Black Hawk helicopter in New Taipei City. The helicopter lost contact with the airbase shortly after taking off.
Seven other people on board also died in the crash, including two Major Generals. Five others survived with injuries.
General Shen's remains were cremated and buried at the Wuzhi Mountain Military Cemetery. A memorial ceremony was held to honor all the victims of the crash.
Awards and Honors
After his death, General Shen Yi-ming was given special honors:
- On January 3, 2020, he was given the Order of Blue Sky and White Sun with Grand Cordon. This is a very high military award.
- He was also promoted to Full General.
- The Ministry of National Defense also awarded him a National Emblem Medal.
