The Phoenix Takes Flight: Team History
The Sherbrooke Phoenix team was created to replace another team. This team was called the Lewiston Maineiacs. The Maineiacs stopped playing at the end of the 2010–11 QMJHL season.
How the Team Started
On May 31, 2011, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League decided to buy the old team. They paid 3.5 million dollars for it. Before moving to Lewiston, Maine, the Maineiacs were known as the Sherbrooke Castors. They played in Sherbrooke until the 2003–04 QMJHL season. The Phoenix is the third time Sherbrooke has had a team in the QMJHL.
On May 22, 2012, the Phoenix named their first head coach. His name was Judes Vallée. He used to coach the Champlain College Cougars.
First Players and Games
The Phoenix picked their first player in the QMJHL Bantam Draft. This draft is where teams choose young players. They chose Daniel Audette as their very first pick. Daniel is the son of Donald Audette, a former player for the Buffalo Sabres. The team then picked more players in a special expansion draft.
The Phoenix played their first game on September 7, 2012. They won against the Victoriaville Tigres with a score of 4-2. Jeremie Beaudry scored the team's first goal. Daniel Audette made the first assist. Beaudry later moved to the Quebec Remparts. On January 13, 2013, the Phoenix got their first shutout win. This means they did not let the other team score any goals. They won against the Saint John Sea Dogs.
First Playoff Appearance
The Phoenix finished their first season with 21 wins and 38 losses. They earned enough points to make the playoffs. This was exciting for the team! However, their playoff journey was short. They lost all four games to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Michael McNamee scored the Phoenix's first playoff goal. Brandon Lesway and Denis Kamaev made the first playoff assists.
