Team History and Beginnings
The Sherbrooke Phoenix team was created to replace another team. That team was the Lewiston Maineiacs, which stopped playing in 2011. On May 31, 2011, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League bought the team. Before moving to Lewiston, the Maineiacs were known as the Sherbrooke Castors. This means the Phoenix is the third QMJHL team for the city of Sherbrooke.
First Coach and Draft Pick
On May 22, 2012, the Phoenix named their first head coach. His name was Judes Vallée. He used to coach the Champlain College Cougars. The Phoenix made their first player choice in the QMJHL Bantam Draft. They picked Daniel Audette. Daniel is the son of Donald Audette, a former player for the Buffalo Sabres. The team then picked more players in a special expansion draft.
First Games and Seasons
The Phoenix played their very first game on September 7, 2012. They won against the Victoriaville Tigres with a score of 4-2. Jeremie Beaudry scored the first goal for the Phoenix. Daniel Audette made the first assist. Beaudry later moved to the Quebec Remparts team. On January 13, 2013, the Phoenix had their first shutout win. This means they stopped the other team from scoring any goals. They won against the Saint John Sea Dogs.
The Phoenix finished their first season in 15th place. This was good enough to make the playoffs. However, they lost in the first round to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Michael McNamee scored the Phoenix's first playoff goal. Brandon Lesway and Denis Kamaev got the first playoff assists.
