Sherlock is a small town and a special area called a "locality" in the sunny Australian state of South Australia. It's located right along the Pinnaroo railway line and the Mallee Highway, which are important routes for travel and transport.

A Look Back: Sherlock's History

Sherlock has an interesting past, especially connected to the railway that helped it grow.

Early Days and Planning

The area where Sherlock now stands was officially "surveyed" in May 1907. This means that people carefully measured and mapped out the land to plan where streets, buildings, and other important parts of the town would go. It was a big step towards creating a new community.

The Railway Arrives

A few years later, in January 1913, the Sherlock railway station officially opened. This was a very important event because railways were the main way to transport goods and people back then. The person in charge of the station was called a "stationmaster," and at Sherlock, this person also looked after the Moorlands station, which was about 9 miles (or 14.5 kilometers) to the west. This shows how crucial the railway was for connecting different towns.

First Stone Building

Sherlock also holds a special place in the history of the Pinnaroo railway line because of its church. The Sherlock Baptist Church opened its doors in 1911. What makes it unique is that it was the very first building made of stone to be built anywhere along the entire Pinnaroo railway line. This was a big achievement and showed how the community was growing and putting down roots.
