Moorlands is a small place, or "locality," in South Australia, a state in Australia. It's located to the east of a bigger town called Murray Bridge. This area is known for its farms, where people grow wheat and raise animals like sheep.

Moorlands is easy to reach because it's right on the Mallee Highway. It's also connected by the Pinnaroo railway line. People think the name "Moorlands" might have come from a place with a similar name near London, England.

Discovery of Coal

Something interesting happened in Moorlands in 1910. That's when a type of coal called lignite was first found nearby. Lignite is a soft, brownish coal that's often used to make electricity.

More investigations and tests were done in the 1920s and 1940s to see how much coal was there. Even though people seemed excited about the coal at Moorlands, the coalfield was never fully developed. The government decided to focus on a much larger coal deposit at Leigh Creek instead.

Population

The Australian Bureau of Statistics collects information about people living in different areas. Here's what they found for Moorlands in 2021:

  • Males: About 56.9% of the people living in Moorlands were male.
  • Females: About 43.1% of the people living in Moorlands were female.
  • Median Age: The middle age of all the people in Moorlands was 46 years old. This means half the people were younger than 46, and half were older.
