Yumali: A Small Town in South Australia

Yumali is a quiet place in South Australia. It is located on the Dukes Highway, which connects Adelaide to Melbourne. The town is part of a local government area called The Coorong District Council. This council helps manage things like roads and services for the community.

What's in a Name?

The name Yumali comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "the great land." Before it was called Yumali, the area was known as Wahpunyah Siding. This shows how the town's name has changed over time.

Water for the Community

For many years, Yumali and nearby farms used water from a bore. This bore water was very important for the community. It also supplied water to the town of Coomandook starting in 1915. However, in 1971, a new pipeline was built. This pipeline brought water from the River Murray, and people no longer needed the bore water.

Sports and Community Life

Yumali has a history of sports and community activities. There are still tennis courts in the town. These courts are used by an active tennis club. This club is part of the 'Border-Downs Tennis Association'. There was once a football team in Yumali. You can still see the old football clubrooms from that time. The town hall was opened in 1960. It serves as a place for community gatherings and events.

Getting Around

Traveling to and from Yumali has become easier. Tynan Road, which connects Yumali to Sherlock, has been improved. It is now a smooth, bitumised road. From Sherlock, Kulkawarra Road goes to Karoonda. These roads make it more comfortable to drive between Karoonda and the upper South East region.
