Sherman Lewis (born June 29, 1942) is an American who used to play and coach American football. He played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). After his playing days, he spent 34 years working as a coach. Lewis studied at Michigan State University and later earned a degree in education.

Sherman Lewis had an amazing career in football, first as a player and then as a highly successful coach. He is known for helping teams win big championships.
Playing Days
Lewis started his college football career at Michigan State University. He played as a running back, which is a player who runs with the ball. In 1963, he was named to the College Football All-America Team. This means he was one of the best college players in the country that year. He even finished third for the Heisman Trophy, which is a huge award for college football players.
After college, Lewis played professionally. He spent parts of 1964 and 1965 with the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League. Then, he played for the New York Jets in the American Football League during the 1966 and 1967 seasons. The AFL later joined with the National Football League.
Coaching Career
After a short time as a professional player, Lewis became a coach. He started as an assistant coach at his old college, Michigan State, from 1969 to 1982.
NFL Coaching Success
Lewis then moved to the National Football League. He became the running backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers under famous coach Bill Walsh. During his time with the 49ers, the team won three Super Bowls! This is one of the biggest achievements in football.
In 1992, Lewis became the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. He worked under head coach Mike Holmgren. An offensive coordinator is in charge of planning how the team will score points. He helped the Packers win another Super Bowl in 1997.
In 2009, Lewis was hired by the Washington Redskins as an offensive consultant. He even started calling plays for the team during games. He left the team after that season.
