Sherwood is an exciting animated science fiction adventure series. It was created by Diana Manson and Megan Laughton. The show first appeared on March 6, 2019, on YouTube Premium.

This series tells a new version of the classic Robin Hood story. It's set in the future and focuses on important ideas. For example, it shows how people live differently based on how much money they have. Robin lives with "the poor 99%" of people. She leads rebels who want to change things. They fight against the Sheriff, who lives in a rich "Upper City." The show is all about Robin and her friends trying to make things fair. They want to fight for justice and make sure everyone is treated equally. Some people also say the show feels like a "cyberpunk" story. This means it has a futuristic world with advanced technology but also a lot of problems.

Sherwood first showed in Sydney, Australia in March 2019. In April 2020, Google made the show free to watch. This was during the pandemic. Even though the first season aired in 2019, you can still find updates about the show online.

Story of Sherwood

In the year 2270, the world has changed a lot. Britain has been damaged by big environmental problems. This is a "dystopic" future, meaning it's not a perfect world. The story follows Robin Loxley, who is 14 years old. She is a talented hacker. Robin and her friends fight against the powerful Sheriff of Nottingham. They want to protect their home and people.

Meet the Characters

Main Heroes and Villains

  • Robin Loxley (voiced by Anya Chalotra) is the main character. She is a brave hacker. Robin often has to fight and take things from the Sheriff of Nottingham. She does this to protect her home, Sherwood. The Sheriff calls her "Insurgent Hood." She even uses the fake name "Marian Johns" sometimes.
  • Iniko (voiced by Tyler Posey) is one of Robin's main friends. He is the pilot of a submarine called Amphy. He calls himself a "Sea Pirate."
  • Gisbourne (voiced by Aneurin Barnard) is the son of the Sheriff of Nottingham. He is in charge of security for the Sheriff's group. He tries to catch Robin and her friends.
  • Sheriff Nottingham (voiced by Joseph Fiennes) is the main bad guy. He rules the rich Upper City. He is the leader of the group that controls everything.

Supporting Friends

  • Tui (voiced by Rachel House) is like a mother figure to Robin. She helps Robin on their Kelp Farm.
  • Gripper (voiced by Adetokumboh M'Cormack) is part of Robin's team. He acts like a father to Juba.
  • Rose Trefgarne (voiced by Jamie Chung) is a helpful friend. She used to live in the Upper City. Now she lives in Sherwood with Robin.
  • Thomas Loxley (voiced by Darrill Rosen) is a smart scientist and inventor. He is Robin Loxley's father.
  • Juba (voiced by Neneh Conteh) is a young girl. She came to Sherwood as a refugee.

How Sherwood Was Made

The idea for Sherwood came from Diana Manson and Megan Laughton. They work for a company called Baby Octopus. They first thought of the show in 2016. Justin Trefgarne then helped develop it.

The show was made for kids around ages 10-12. It focuses on "positive female empowerment." This means it wants to show strong, capable girls. Baby Octopus worked with Google's Computer Science in Media team. They imagined what the future would be like. They wanted to inspire young women and girls to get involved in technology.

Justin Trefgarne wrote the first script in 2016. YouTube then ordered nine more episodes in January 2017. The show was inspired by the classic Japanese comic Akira. That story is also set in a futuristic world after a big disaster.

In February 2019, special videos were released. They showed how the show was made. In one video, director Bruce Carter talked about the futuristic London setting. He said the story is about Robin and her "merry band" of friends. Executive producer Nanette Miles said the show would inspire many young girls. Production designer Daniel McKay called Robin a "tinkerer." This means she's good at fixing and changing technology. Production coordinator Freya Walker Smith said Robin is a "cool girl" who fights for herself. She is a "powerful heroine who can code."

In another video, music producers Jacob Yoffee and Roahn Hylton talked about the music. They wanted the music to make the world feel bigger and more real. Yoffee said they wanted a "futuristic" sound. They also mixed in "world music." Hylton said Robin is a hero everyone can support. Her music has a "superhero element" but also a "bit of sadness." This is because she is trying to figure out who she is.

Finally, Anya Chalotra, who voices Robin, shared her thoughts. She said Robin would be her friend if she were 14. Robin would inspire her. Chalotra said Robin is independent and wants to make the world better and fairer. She called Robin a great example of a young leader. Erin Rainaldi, a software engineer, said it's important to show girls are good at technology. Jamie Chung, who voices Rose, called Robin fun and a rebel. She hoped the show would inspire young girls. Bernadette Carter, a software engineer from Google, said Robin is a "strong female lead." She doesn't let others tell her what to do. She is also kind and determined.
