Shevlin was a unique place in Oregon, USA. It wasn't a regular town but an unincorporated community. This means it didn't have its own local government. Shevlin was special because it was a collection of buildings that moved!
These buildings were part of a logging camp. They were built on rail cars and could be moved from one place to another. This happened as the loggers cut down trees in different areas. The people who lived and worked in Shevlin were loggers for a company called Shevlin–Hixon.
Where Was Shevlin Located?
Shevlin was located in two different counties in Oregon: Deschutes County and Klamath County. Because it was a moving logging camp, its exact location changed over time.
Shevlin's Changing Spots
Here are some of the places Shevlin was known to be:
- About 10 miles (16 km) south of Lava Butte. This spot was also about 3 miles (5 km) east of U.S. Route 97. Both of these locations were in Deschutes County.
- Another spot was about 3 miles (5 km) southeast of La Pine, also in Deschutes County.
- Later, the community moved to Summit Stage Station. This was on Oregon Route 31 in northeastern Klamath County. It was close to the border with Lake County.
Today, the Geographic Names Information System (a database of place names) places Shevlin in the Fremont–Winema National Forest. This is southeast of Chemult.
