Shim Wan-koo (Korean: 심완구; Hanja: 沈完求; RR: Sim Wan-gu; 1 July 1938 – 8 June 2020) was an important South Korean politician. He was the very first elected Mayor of Ulsan, a major city in South Korea. He also served as a member of the National Assembly, which is like the country's parliament, from 1985 to 1992.
Early Life and Education
Shim Wan-koo was born on July 1, 1938. His birthplace was in a village called Songho, located in what was then Ulsan-gun, during the time Korea was under Japanese rule. Today, this area is part of modern Ulsan, South Korea.
He went to Sungkyunkwan University. There, he studied economics, which is about how money, goods, and services are made and used.
Becoming a Politician
Shim Wan-koo began his political journey by running for elections. In 1981, he tried to become a member of the National Assembly for the Ulsan-Ulju-gun area. He didn't win that time.
However, he tried again in 1985 for the same area. This time, he was elected to the National Assembly. He served in this role for four years. In 1988, he was elected again, representing a different part of Ulsan.
Serving as Mayor of Ulsan
In 1995, Shim Wan-koo was elected as the Mayor of Ulsan. This was a big step in his career. Ulsan became a special "metropolitan city" on July 15, 1997. This meant his official term as mayor started on that date. He served as mayor until June 30, 2002.
During his time as mayor, he changed political parties. In 1998, he left the Grand National Party and joined the National Congress for New Politics. This party was led by Kim Dae-jung, who later became president.
Later Years
After his time as Mayor of Ulsan, Shim Wan-koo continued to be involved in politics. He supported different candidates in presidential elections. For example, in 2007, he supported a conservative candidate. Later, in 2012, he supported a more liberal candidate.
In 2018, he also supported Song Cheol-ho in his campaign to become the Mayor of Ulsan. Shim Wan-koo passed away on June 8, 2020, in Seoul, South Korea.
