Shin Kyuk-ho (born October 4, 1921 – died January 19, 2020) was a very successful businessman from South Korea. In Japan, he was known as Takeo Shigemitsu. He is most famous for starting a huge company called Lotte Corporation. Lotte grew into a major business group with many different parts.

Shin Kyuk-ho's Journey to Success
Shin Kyuk-ho was born in Ulsan, which was part of Korea under Japanese rule, in 1922. When he was 20 years old, in 1941, he secretly traveled by ship to Japan. There, he went to Waseda University to study chemical engineering. This is a type of engineering that deals with how chemicals are made and used.
Starting His First Business
In 1942, Shin Kyuk-ho opened his first business. He started a factory that made rice cookers. These are machines that cook rice automatically. Sadly, his factory was destroyed during an air raid in the war.
Founding Lotte Corporation
After his first factory was destroyed, Shin Kyuk-ho did not give up. In 1948, he started a new company called Lotte. At first, Lotte only sold chewing gum. But it quickly grew into a very large multinational corporation. A multinational corporation is a big company that does business in many different countries.
By 2017, Lotte had become the fifth largest business group in South Korea. It was known as a "chaebol", which is a big family-controlled business group in South Korea.
Retirement and Later Life
In June 2017, after almost 70 years, Shin Kyuk-ho retired from his role. He was a board director for Lotte Holdings Co. for a very long time. Later in his life, Shin Kyuk-ho faced some legal challenges regarding his business dealings. However, because of his poor health, he was allowed to remain free.
Shin Kyuk-ho's Family Life
Shin Kyuk-ho had four children from three different marriages. His first wife was Noh Soon-hwa. She passed away in 1951. They had one daughter together, named Shin Young-ja, who was born in 1942.
In 1952, Shin Kyuk-ho married Hatsuko Shigemitsu, a Japanese woman. They had two sons: Shin Dong-joo, born in 1954, and Shin Dong-bin, born in 1955. Shin Kyuk-ho also had a relationship with Seo Mi-Kyung in South Korea. They had one daughter, Shin Yu-mi, who was born in 1983.
