"Shine" is a cool song by American singer Gwen Stefani. It also features vocals from American entertainer Pharrell Williams. This song was first planned for Gwen Stefani's band, No Doubt. But then, it was used for the 2014 animated movie Paddington.
Pharrell Williams wrote and produced the song. Gwen Stefani also helped write it. "Shine" is a mix of reggae pop and ska music. The words of the song are all about Paddington Bear's trip to London. They also talk about him trying to figure out who he is. Gwen Stefani first thought it was strange to put Paddington's name directly in the song. But after watching the movie with her kids, she loved the idea! She said her kids' love for England and her husband at the time, Gavin Rossdale, made her want to be part of the song.
About the Song's Release
A special video for the song, called a lyric video, came out on January 31, 2015. You could find it on The Weinstein Company's YouTube channel. This video was also included on the DVD and Blu-ray versions of the Paddington movie.
The song "Shine" was used in the American trailer for the movie. It was also given out as a special CD to promote it. This was done so the song could be thought about for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. A low-quality version of the song was leaked online on December 31, 2014. But the full, high-quality song was never officially released for everyone to buy. It wasn't on the movie's soundtrack album. It also wasn't on Gwen Stefani's album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like (2016).
The Lyric Video
Even though the full song wasn't released to the public, a special CD version was made in January 2015. These CDs were sent to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This was part of the process to see if "Shine" could win an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song was one of 79 songs considered, but it didn't get nominated.
The lyric video was put on The Weinstein Company's YouTube channel on January 13, 2015. It was about one minute and 35 seconds long. The video showed clips from the Paddington movie. It got over two million views in just 24 hours! The video showed scenes where the famous Peruvian bear gets into all sorts of funny situations. He tries to find a home and wins over people's hearts. This video was also on the DVD and Blu-ray of Paddington. It came with a special behind-the-scenes look at how the song was made.
"Shine" was in the American trailer and the closing credits for Paddington. But it wasn't in the British version of the film. Idolator's Christina Lee said the song was only released for the United States and Canada. As mentioned, it wasn't on the movie's soundtrack or Gwen Stefani's album. On January 21, 2015, radio host Ryan Seacrest mistakenly said the song was available to buy on the iTunes Store during an interview with Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams.
