Shiocton is a small village located in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In 2010, about 921 people lived there. The village is completely surrounded by the Town of Bovina.

History of Shiocton Village

The name Shiocton comes from the Menominee language. The Menominee people called this place Māēnomehsāyak. This means "wild rice along the banks."

Wild rice was a very important food for many Native American groups in the area. This includes the Menominee people. Their name even means "people of the wild rice."

In 1836, the Menominee people gave this land to the United States. This happened after many talks about helping other Native American groups. These groups, like the Oneida and Stockbridge-Munsee, were moving from New York to Wisconsin.

When white settlers first arrived, Shiocton was called Jordan's Landing or Jordanville. This name likely came from Woodford D. Jordan. He was one of the first two white settlers in the area. The name Shiocton came into use later on.

Fun Things to Do in Shiocton

Shiocton is a popular spot for people who love to fish. This is because the Wolf River flows through the village.

The busiest time for fishing is in April. This is when walleye fish swim upstream in the river. Later in April, sturgeon fish also swim up the Wolf River from Lake Winnebago to lay their eggs.

Many people gather at a spot called Bamboo Bend to watch the sturgeon. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also studies these fish there.

Other fun events include:

  • A "fly-in" event at the Shiocton Airport in late July.
  • The "Cabbage Chuck" contest in September. This event is sponsored by St. Denis Catholic Church.
