Greenville is a village located in Outagamie County, Wisconsin. It's part of a group of 18 communities called the Fox Cities, which is the third largest big city area in Wisconsin. In 2020, about 12,619 people lived here.

History of Greenville

Greenville started as a settlement in 1848. It was first known as Greenville Station. In 1879, its name changed to Becker, named after the first postmaster. Then, in 1896, it was changed back to Greenville.

The community tried to become an official village. After an initial try was not approved, they had a vote in November 2020. The eastern part of Greenville became a village in January 2021. The western part then joined the village in June 2021. This made Greenville one of the biggest villages in Wisconsin, both in size and population.

Greenville's Geography

Greenville covers about 35.8 square miles (92.7 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.1 square kilometers), is water.

Two other places, the former community of Greenville and the old "ghost town" of Wakefield, are also found within the village's boundaries.

People of Greenville (Demographics)

Greenville is part of the larger Appleton, Wisconsin metropolitan area. It is also included in the Appleton-Oshkosh-Neenah, Wisconsin combined statistical area.

In 2000, there were 6,844 people living in Greenville. There were 2,301 households, with many being families. About 48.4% of households had children under 18 living with them. The average household had almost 3 people. The median age of people in Greenville was 34 years old.

Greenville's Economy

The Appleton International Airport is very important for Greenville's economy. Many large businesses are located in parks around the airport.

The Appleton International Airport is located right in Greenville. This airport is the main office for Air Wisconsin. It was also the original home of Midwest Airlines, which started from a company called K-C Aviation.

Greenville is also close to major highways. It is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of Interstate 41 I-41.svg and 1.8 miles (2.9 km) north of U.S. Route 10 US 10.svg. The historic Yellowstone Trail National Historic Automobile Route also runs through Greenville.

Parks and Fun Activities

The Village of Greenville has about 210 acres (0.85 square kilometers) of parkland. There are 10 different park facilities for everyone to enjoy.

  • Amber Woods is an undeveloped woodland area. There are plans to build trails here in the future.
  • Appletree Square is a small park with crab apple trees. It connects to the Greenville Trail System and Jennerjohn Park.
  • Community Park is the main park for fun activities. It has four baseball fields, bleachers, a pavilion, kitchens, restrooms, a snack building, playgrounds, tennis courts, and basketball courts. It also connects to the Greenville Trail System.
  • Field of Dreams is a large undeveloped area. Plans for it include five baseball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic areas, and nature trails.
  • Glen Valley Park is a park with playground equipment.
  • Elder Brook Park (formerly Glen Valley Park) is a neighborhood park with a pond and trails.
  • Jennerjohn Park is a neighborhood park with a baseball field, playground, tennis courts, a fountain, a sledding hill, and an ice rink. It connects to the Greenville Trail System and Appletree Square.
  • Kimberly Court Park is a small park with evergreen trees. It connects to the Greenville Trail System.
  • Lions Park is a large community park. It has a pond, nature trails, picnic shelters, a big amphitheater, and a playground. It also connects to the Greenville Trail System.
  • Memorial Square is a small park in front of the Public Safety Building. It has memorials for veterans, firefighters, and police officers.
  • Pebble Ridge Park is a neighborhood park with a forest, a pond, and walking trails.

The Heath Van Handel Memorial Forest is also in Greenville. This 39-acre forest used to be a plant nursery and test area.

Greenville also hosts special events, like the Annual catfish races!
