Early Life and Moving to Israel
Shlomo Erell was born in Poland in 1920. When he was six years old, his family moved to the land that would later become Israel (then called Mandatory Palestine). They first lived in Petah Tikva and then settled in Tel Aviv. As a young person, he was part of a youth group called Betar.
A Career at Sea
When World War II started, Shlomo Erell joined the British merchant marine. This meant he worked on ships that carried goods across the sea. In 1941, his ship was sunk by a torpedo from a German U-boat (a submarine). Luckily, Erell was rescued. After he recovered, he went back to working on ships.
After the war, he left the British Navy as a captain. When the 1948 Arab–Israeli War began, Shlomo Erell joined the new Israeli Navy. He became the captain of an Israeli naval ship named Palmach. This ship was known for many successful missions in the Sinai and Lebanon.
After the war, Erell continued his career as an officer in the IDF. He held many important jobs. For example, he worked at the Israeli embassy in Italy as a military attaché. He also commanded the Israeli Navy's missile ships.
In January 1966, Shlomo Erell was promoted to the rank of Aluf, which is like a Major General. He then became the Commander of the Israeli Navy. He led the navy for two years. In 1968, he decided to leave his position and retired from the IDF.
After His Military Service
After retiring from the military, Shlomo Erell went to Columbia University. He earned a master's degree in administration. In the 1970s, he became involved in politics and joined the Likud party. Israeli leaders often asked him for advice on naval matters.
His Passing
Shlomo Erell passed away on November 20, 2018. This was also his 98th birthday.
