Shmuel HaLevi Wosner (Hebrew: שמואל הלוי ואזנר, born September 4, 1913 – died April 3, 2015) was a very important Haredi rabbi. He was also a posek, which means he was an expert in Jewish law. He lived in Bnei Brak, Israel. People often called him the Shevet HaLevi. This name came from his most famous book.
Rabbi Wosner's Life Story
Shmuel Wosner was born in Vienna, which was part of Austro-Hungary at the time. He studied at a famous school called Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva in Poland. His main teacher there was Rabbi Meir Shapiro. He also learned from Rabbi Shimon of Zelicov.
Before the Holocaust began, he moved to Palestine. He settled in Jerusalem and continued his studies at the Dushinsky yeshiva. Even when he was young, he became a member of the Edah HaChareidis, a group of important Jewish leaders.
Later, he moved to Bnei Brak. Other important rabbis, like the Chazon Ish, encouraged him to do so. In Bnei Brak, he started a neighborhood called Zichron Meir. He also opened a yeshiva there, giving it the same name as his old school: Yeshiva Chachmei Lublin.
His Important Books and Teachings
Rabbi Wosner wrote many books about Jewish law. His most well-known work is called Shevet HaLevi. This is a large collection of his rulings and answers to questions about Jewish laws. It has ten volumes! His ideas and opinions on Jewish law are used by many people. They are quoted in many books written in both Hebrew and English.
In 2012, Rabbi Wosner spoke to a very large gathering in Queens, New York. He spoke to about 60,000 people through a live video link from Israel. He talked about using the internet safely. He said that the internet should be used only for business and with special filters.
Rabbi Wosner passed away in Bnei Brak when he was 101 years old.
His Family
Rabbi Wosner had several sons. One of his sons was Rabbi Chaim Wosner (1939-2021). He used to be a judge in London's Satmar community. Later, he moved to Bnei Brak to help his father manage the yeshiva. Another son, Rabbi Bentzion Wosner, lives in Monsey, New York. He is also an important judge in a Jewish court called the Shevet Halevi beis din.
His Funeral
Rabbi Wosner was buried on the night of April 4, 2015. A very large crowd of about 100,000 people attended his funeral. It was a huge gathering to honor his memory.
