Shoichi Nishimura (西邑 昌一, born in 1912 – died March 22, 1998) was a Japanese football player and manager. He played as a forward. Nishimura was also a member of the Japan national team.

Playing for Clubs

Shoichi Nishimura was born in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in 1912. He played football for a team called Kwangaku Club. This club was made up of players and graduates from his university, Kwansei Gakuin University. In 1930, he helped Kwangaku Club win the Emperor's Cup. He played alongside other famous players like Yukio Goto and Hideo Sakai.

Playing for Japan

In May 1934, while still a student at Kwansei Gakuin University, Nishimura was chosen to play for the Japan national football team. He joined the team for the 1934 Far Eastern Championship Games in Manila.

  • On May 13, he played his first game for Japan against the Dutch East Indies.
  • Two days later, on May 15, he played against the Philippines and scored a goal.

Overall, he played 2 games and scored 1 goal for Japan in 1934.

In 1936, Nishimura was again selected for the Japan team. This time, it was for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Although he was part of the team, he did not play in any matches.

At these Olympics, Japan achieved a huge victory. They came from behind to win their first game against Sweden. This was Japan's first-ever win in football at the Olympics. This amazing win over a strong team became known as the "Miracle of Berlin" in Japan. In 2016, this historic team was honored and added to the Japan Football Hall of Fame.

Coaching Teams

After he stopped playing football, Shoichi Nishimura became a coach. He coached his old university team, Kwansei Gakuin University, and also Kwangaku Club. As the manager for Kwangaku Club, he led them to win the Emperor's Cup twice more, in 1958 and 1959 Emperor's Cup.

In 1976, he started coaching for Yomiuri, a team in the Japan Soccer League Division 2. In the 1977 season, he guided the team to win the championship. This win helped them move up to Division 1, the top league. He left the team in 1980.

Shoichi Nishimura passed away on March 22, 1998, in Akashi. He was 86 years old.
