Adeshola Mos-Shogbamimu (whose maiden name was Babington-Ashaye) is a British-Nigerian lawyer and academic. She is well-known as an activist and a political commentator. This means she speaks and writes a lot about important social and political issues. She often shares her thoughts on women's rights, laws, politics, and how to make society fairer for everyone. Her first book, This is Why I Resist, talks about how black identity should not be defined by old ideas and encourages people to change how they see the black experience in daily life.

Early Life and Education

Adeshola Babington-Ashaye was born in Hackney, London, on November 13, 1975. She grew up in different places, including London, Nigeria, and the United States. She also lived in East Africa when her mother worked for the Commonwealth of Nations.

Shola has said that her Nigerian background really shaped her. She explained that her parents taught her to be proud of who she is. This helped her never feel less important because of her skin color, or because she is a woman. She even called her father the "first male feminist" she knew, meaning he strongly believed in equal rights for women.

She started her higher education early. At 19, she earned her first degree in law from the University of Buckingham. She then continued her studies, getting several more advanced degrees. These include a master's degree in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Westminster, another master's in Commercial & Corporate Law from the London School of Economics, and a PhD in Law from Birkbeck, University of London. Later, she also completed an Executive MBA from the University of Cambridge.

Career and Public Role

Shola Mos-Shogbamimu is a qualified lawyer in New York, USA, and also in England and Wales. She has worked in international finance, which involves managing money and investments across different countries.

Her Role as a Commentator

In June 2020, Vogue magazine recognized Mos-Shogbamimu as one of "8 Educational Black Voices To Listen And Learn From Now." She also started her own magazine called Women in Leadership.

She often appears on television to discuss current events, politics, and issues about race and diversity. She has spoken out strongly about how she believes the media sometimes treats "women of color" unfairly. For example, she has talked about famous people like Serena Williams and Meghan Markle.

In 2019, Mos-Shogbamimu gave a TEDx Talk titled "This is why I resist." In her talk, she explained why she refuses to let her skin color, gender, or religion define her. She shared her ideas on feminism and politics, encouraging her audience to join what she calls a "conscious revolution." In March 2021, she had a well-known debate with Piers Morgan on the TV show Good Morning Britain. They discussed the interview that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had with Oprah Winfrey.

Some of her comments have caused debate. For example, in February 2024, a family who supported Newcastle University decided to stop their support. This happened after Mos-Shogbamimu received an honorary degree from the university, and she had made some strong comments on social media about the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Her Book

Her first book, This Is Why I Resist: Don't Define My Black Identity, was published in January 2021. The book aims to help people understand the complex ideas around race, racism, and how to include everyone fairly in society.
