Shonie Carter (born May 3, 1972) is an American mixed martial artist. He is also known as "Mr. International." Shonie is famous for his exciting fighting style. He is also known for his unique clothes and fun personality. He often uses a special move called the spinning backfist.
Shonie Carter was once the champion in the Welterweight division of the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). He also fought in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He was even on a TV show called The Ultimate Fighter.

Shonie Carter's Early Life and Training
Shonie Carter was born in Chicago, Illinois. He joined the United States Marine Corps and served for six years. After that, he started his career as a fighter.
He went to Triton College where he began wrestling. Later, he moved to Carson-Newman College in Tennessee. There, he started learning Judo and Jujutsu. He was a great wrestler and even tried out for the Olympic Games.
After just one semester of Judo, Shonie entered the Tennessee state championship. He won titles in lower belt divisions. He also placed second in the Black Belt division. His teacher then gave him his Brown Belt. Later, he also learned Kung Fu and Karate. Besides mixed martial arts, Shonie was also a professional kickboxer. He had an impressive record of 57 wins and only 5 losses.
Shonie Carter's Fighting Career
Shonie Carter has fought in many different events. He has won at least ten championship belts. He started his fighting journey in 1997. His first fight was a quick loss, but he quickly improved. He built a strong record before facing famous fighters.
Joining the UFC
Shonie started fighting in the UFC at UFC 24. He won his first UFC fight. He also had big wins against fighters like Chris Lytle and Matt Serra. In 2003, he became the WEC Welterweight Champion. He won this title by beating JT Taylor.
However, he lost his WEC title in his next fight. He also fought other well-known fighters. These included Jon Fitch and Jess Liaudin. He even beat Jason Black, who had not lost in 22 fights.
The Ultimate Fighter Show
In 2005, Shonie joined The Ultimate Fighter 4. This was a reality TV show for fighters. The show was called "The Comeback." It featured fighters who wanted to restart their careers in the UFC. Shonie was part of Team Mojo.
He fought Rich Clementi first and won. Later, he had a rematch with Matt Serra. Their previous fight was famous because Shonie won with a spinning backfist. Shonie landed another spinning backfist in this rematch. But he still lost the fight by decision.
On the show, Shonie was known for his unique style. He wore unusual clothes and worked on art projects. He even trained with the other team for a day. He also asked his opponent from an earlier fight to help him.
After the TV Show
After the show, Shonie continued to fight in smaller events. He won the Throwdown Middleweight Championship in 2009. He retired from fighting in 2013. At that time, he had fought in about 240 professional matches.
In 2014, Shonie came out of retirement. He fought Matt Dwyer for a championship. Shonie lost this fight.
Beyond the Ring
After The Ultimate Fighter, Shonie appeared on another TV show. It was called The Iron Ring on BET. He was a coach for one of the teams. On the show, he had a disagreement with famous boxer Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather often spoke negatively about mixed martial arts. Shonie says he became more famous in the black community after this show.
In 2008, Shonie was a referee for a fight. This fight became very famous online. Two fighters knocked each other out at the same time! The video of this double-knockout has been watched over a million times on YouTube. Shonie has also talked about joining professional wrestling.
Bare Knuckle Boxing
In 2017, Shonie Carter tried bare-knuckle boxing. This is a type of boxing where fighters wrap their hands but don't wear big gloves. He fought Jimmy Sweeney in England. Shonie lost the fight by decision. But he was the first fighter to last all five rounds against Sweeney.
Shonie Carter's Personal Life
Shonie Carter lives in Chicago, Illinois. He has three children: Sierra Rena, Samearion Andreas, and Kavion Osiris. He teaches martial arts at a dojo in Chicago. He also works as a bartender and bouncer. He is also a personal trainer.
