Shontelle's Music Journey

Starting Out: Shontelligence (2008–2009)

Shontelle started working on her first album in early 2008. She finished it in just six months! The album's name, Shontelligence, was a fun idea from the sound engineer. He made it up as a joke while they were playing a word game.

Shontelle's first song, "T-Shirt", was released in July 2008. It became a hit, reaching number thirty-six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. The song was even more popular in Belgium and the United Kingdom, where it reached the top ten.

Her first album, Shontelligence, came out on November 18, 2008. It sold 6,200 copies in its first week in the US. The album was re-released in March 2009 and has sold 30,000 copies in the US.

The second song from the album was "Stuck with Each Other". It featured the singer Akon. This song was released in the US in February 2009 and in the UK in May 2009. While it didn't chart in the US, it reached number 23 in the United Kingdom.

Shontelle also went on tour to support other artists. In January 2009, she opened for New Kids on the Block during their tour in the UK. From May to June 2009, she was also the opening act for Beyoncé's I Am... World Tour in Britain.

Besides singing, Shontelle has written songs for other artists in Barbados. This includes "Roll It Gyal" for Alison Hinds in 2007 and "Winners" for Shanta Prince in 2018.

Shontelle's second album, No Gravity, was released in the US on September 21, 2010. Shontelle said she wanted this album to be different and more experimental. The title "No Gravity" means to keep climbing higher and not let anything hold her back. She worked with famous artists like Bruno Mars and Tony Kanal on this album.

In its first week, No Gravity sold 7,000 copies in the US. Later in 2010, Shontelle helped write Rihanna's song "Man Down" for her album Loud. Shontelle and Rihanna actually knew each other from army cadets, where Shontelle was Rihanna's drill sergeant!

The main song from No Gravity was "Impossible". It was released in February 2010. This song became her biggest hit, reaching number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The second song from the album, "Perfect Nightmare", came out in August 2010. "Say Hello to Goodbye" was released as the third song in March 2011.
