Conradina

brevifolia

Conradina brevifolia is a special and rare plant. It's a type of shrub that belongs to the mint family. People often call it the short-leaved false rosemary because its leaves are small, and it smells a bit like rosemary.

This plant is found only in one small area: Central Florida, specifically on a place called the Lake Wales Ridge. It's very rare, with only about 36 groups of these plants left. Sadly, some of these groups might disappear as their homes are broken up by new buildings and farms. Most of the Lake Wales Ridge, where this plant lives, has already been cleared away. Because it's so rare and its home is shrinking, the United States government has listed it as an endangered species. This means it needs special protection to survive.

What Does It Look Like?

This plant is a fragrant shrub that can grow up to about one meter (about 3 feet) tall. It has small, soft, and sticky leaves that are shaped like thin lines. Each leaf is less than one centimeter long. The plant also grows pretty lavender flowers. These flowers appear where the leaves meet the stem. This plant was once thought to be the same as another species, Conradina canescens, but scientists now know they are different.

Where Does It Live?

The short-leaved false rosemary grows in a special kind of forest called Florida scrub. It likes to grow in white sandy soil. You can often find it among sand pines and oak trees. This specific type of habitat is unique to Florida.

Why Is It Endangered?

This shrub can live for a long time. Even though the groups of plants are now spread out, many of the older plants grew up before their homes were broken up. This allowed them to share their genes with other groups, which helps keep the species strong and healthy. Today, it's harder for plants to share genes because they are more separated.

Other things that threaten this plant include:

The Importance of Fire

Like many smaller plants in the Florida scrub, this shrub needs natural fires. These fires help clear away overgrown bushes and tall trees. This allows sunlight to reach the smaller plants growing on the ground. Today, fires are often stopped to protect buildings. This means the plants don't get the sunlight they need. To help the short-leaved false rosemary, people sometimes do "controlled burns." These are fires that are carefully started and managed to help the land.

Some groups of these plants are protected in places like Lake Arbuckle State Forest. However, most of the plants are not protected. Many grow on private land. Scientists still need to learn more about how this plant lives and grows. More research is needed to help protect it.
