Shree Bose (born March 27, 1994) is an American scientist and inventor. She is also a speaker who shares her knowledge with others. She became famous for winning the very first Google Science Fair in 2011.
Shree studied at Harvard College and later earned two advanced degrees, an MD (medical doctor) and a PhD (doctor of philosophy), from Duke University School of Medicine in 2023. As of July 2025, she is part of a special program for doctors and scientists at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Shree's Amazing Career
Winning the Google Science Fair
In 2011, when Shree Bose was 17 years old, she won the top prize at the Google Science Fair. She received $50,000 for her amazing research. Her project focused on a chemotherapy medicine called cisplatin. This medicine is often used to treat ovarian cancer.
Shree wanted to find out why cancer cells sometimes become resistant to cisplatin over time. This means the medicine stops working as well. She was inspired to do this research because her grandfather had passed away from lung cancer. She worked on her project with help from Dr. Alakananda Basu.
After winning, Shree gave a talk at TEDxWomen 2011. She spoke alongside the other two winners, Lauren Hodge and Naomi Shah. They shared their science projects and talked about their journeys in science. As part of her prize, Shree and her family visited CERN. This is a huge science lab in Europe. Their visit happened on the same day that scientists announced the discovery of the Higgs boson, a tiny particle that helps explain how other particles get their mass.
An asteroid, a small rocky body in space, was even named after her! It is called 25178 Shreebose.
Starting Piper: A STEM Company
In 2014, Shree helped start a company called Piper. Piper is a STEM education company. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Piper creates special kits that teach kids about computer engineering. They do this by using the popular game Minecraft.
The company got some of its first money from Kickstarter, a website where people can help fund new ideas. Shree worked with Piper until she finished her college studies. Then, she decided to focus on becoming a doctor and scientist.
Other Important Work
Shree has been involved in many other interesting projects.
- In 2014, she spoke on a panel with important people like Bill Clinton and Jimmy Wales. They talked about how more and more people can share their ideas and start their own projects.
- In 2018, Microsoft featured her in an advertisement for their Windows 10 computer system.
- In 2023, she was recognized by Forbes magazine. She was included in their "30 Under 30" list for science. This list highlights 30 successful people under 30 years old.
- In January 2024, Shree was part of Duke University's 100-year celebration. She helped mark the university's founding in 1924.
Shree's Education Journey
Shree went to high school at Fort Worth Country Day School and finished in 2012. She then attended Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While there, she was chosen as one of the "15 Most Interesting Seniors" by the student newspaper, The Harvard Crimson.
She earned her first college degree, a B.A. in Molecular and Cellular Biology, in May 2016. Later, in 2023, she graduated from Duke University School of Medicine with both an MD and a PhD. She is now part of a special program at the University of Chicago Medical Center that trains doctors who also do scientific research.
